Chapter 6

A Seafood Betrayal

The mental link ended silently.

My perceptive wolf felt the growing distance between us, the subtle shift in their pack loyalty.

This impending separation weighed heavily.

I took a deep breath, composing myself.”My closest friend from the Bloodmoon Pack is getting married. You two coming?” I omitted the crucial detail: I was the one getting married.

They exchanged a glance, a flicker of confusion in their eyes.

Their wolves sensed the deception. But they didn’t press it, offering a perfunctory response.

“Nah, too much work at the office.”

Benjamin, still clearly upset about Qiana’s injury the previous day, grabbed some files and headed to his study without a second glance. His guardian wolf radiated continued concern for Qiana.

Adam, his face grim, said with annoyance, “Qiana got hurt because of you yesterday. You better apologize to her. Otherwise, I’m not interested in attending any wedding.” He stomped off to his room, slamming the door. His shadow wolf’s anger was simmering.

I laughed, a self-deprecating sound. My perceptive wolf registered the finality of it all. Our friendship, once so strong, was irrevocably fractured.

Any attempts at reconciliation would be futile.

The next morning, I got up for breakfast. As I sat down, the strong scent of river fish hit me. My perceptive wolf immediately recognized the danger.

My face paled. My heart pounded. A terrible premonition washed over me. . I’m allergic to river fish! A severe reaction could be fatal! My wolf screamed in panic.

I gasped for air, my breathing becoming ragged. My throat felt constricted.”My… my allergy medicine…” My hands shook uncontrollably, knocking over the bowl of river fish stew. Crash!*

The shattered bowl and the spilled stew created a mess. Using the last of my strength, I staggered toward the medicine cabinet, my fingers fumbling for the medication.

Benjamin and Adam rushed in, hearing the commotion. Seeing the chaos and my distress, their reaction wasn’t concern, but anger.

Their wolves were unable to suppress their displeasure.

“What the hell are you doing?” Benjamin’s voice was icy. His guardian wolf’s protectiveness was absent, replaced by annoyance.

I’d just found the medication and had no energy to answer.

Adam, furious, shoved me aside and knelt, frantically cleaning up the spilled stew. His shadow wolf’s anger was sharp and unforgiving.”You…”

I stumbled, hitting the corner of the table. A searing pain shot through my waist, almost knocking the air from my lungs. I clutched the medicine bottle, my fingers trembling, my breathing labored.

Finally, I managed to open it and pull out the life-saving antihistamine. It felt like a lifeline. I swallowed the pill, then collapsed into a chair.

The medicine started working, easing the suffocating feeling. I’d survived, but Benjamin and Adam were still busy cleaning up the mess. Their wolves remained unconcerned with my near-death experience, their focus remaining on the mess I had made.

My perceptive wolf felt the sting of their indifference, an even deeper wound than my physical injury.
