Chapter 12
Elie dragged his suitcase off the long–distance bus, and the air in Beacon was filled with the familiar scent of flowers.
Mother had been waiting at the platform for a long time. As soon as she saw her, tears welled up in her eyes and she tightly held her hand, saying, “It’s good that you’re back, it’s good that you’re back.”
On the way home, Elie looked silently at the scenery flying past the
window.
Beacon seemed to have been abandoned by time, with hardly any changes. The breakfast stall on the street corner was still there, and the locust tree at the alley entrance was still lush, as if time had stood still
here.
But she seemed to wake up from a long nightmare, exhausted all over, but finally breathed the air of freedom.
A gust of wind blew by, and just then a dangling locust flower fell from the branch, landing perfectly in her palm.
Elie gently held the flower to his nose, even though it was just a small flower on the verge of wilting, it emitted a strong fragrance.
And her heart, which had been as silent as dead water, seemed to be slowly awakening.
“Elie, your mom has arranged a few blind dates for you, all with good conditions, her mother, Alanna Roberts, looked at her carefully. “If you’re not interested, just treat it as making a new friend.

Elie nodded gently, “Okay.”
She knew she could not indulge in the past anymore.
Eric had already chosen Clara, and she had to move forward.
After resting at home for a few days, Elie tidied up her clothes and makeup, and went to the appointment.
The first two blind dates ended in a disagreement. She just wanted to get to know each other, but the other party kept boasting about their family background and demands, and their behavior was also rude and vulgar.
It wasn’t until the third blind date appeared that Elie began to have a change of heart.
He was a surgeon at Beacon Health Center, named Javon Norman.
He arrived ten minutes earlier than the agreed time, wearing a simple white shirt with the sleeves slightly rolled up, revealing a clearly defined forearm.
When he saw Elie, he hesitated for a moment and then politely smiled, “Ms. Roberts?”
His eyes were very clean, without scrutiny, without calculation, just looking at her gently.
Elie’s subconscious tension relaxed slightly.
They ordered two cups of tea. Javon did not rush to promote himself like other blind date candidates, but instead asked, “How have you been resting lately?”
Elie was taken aback.

He pointed to the dark circles under her eyes and said, “The dark circles. are a bit heavy.”
She suddenly realized that she hadn’t looked in the mirror properly for a long time.
Javon didn’t pursue further and simply said, “If you’re tired, we can chat another day.”
Elie shook his head and said, “It’s okay.”
They chatted casually, Javon didn’t deliberately bring up topics, but every sentence was just right.
As he was leaving, he handed her a business card: “If you need any help, you can contact me.”
Elie took it and whispered a thank you.
Javon looked at her and suddenly said, “Ms. Roberts, you look… very tired.”
Her finger trembled.
“If you don’t mind, he said softly, “we can be friends first.”
Elie looked up and gazed into his eyes for the first time.
In those eyes, there was no pity, only a calm respect.
She couldn’t help but feel a tremor in her heart, and unexpectedly felt a sense of belonging that was hard to describe.
She also smiled at Javon, revealing the only genuine smile she had shown in these past few months.
