Carmen received the bondbreaking deal a day later, delivered by a Beta at the pack doctor’s place. The sender’s name was strikingly clearLiora

He was still there tending to Evelynne when the document arrived. Receiving her letter, Carmen let out a cold, disdainful laugh

Liora’s really getting out of hand. Yesterday it was a suicide attempt, today she wants to break the mate bond. What next? Is she going to cry at my grandmother’s grave?”

Evelynne glanced curiously at the bondbreaking deal. She noticed that Liora hadn’t asked for anythingshe had left all the property to Carmen. Her eyes lit up with excitement, and she looked at him with hopeful anticipation

Carmen, you said you didn’t love her, right? Then just break the mate bond with her. That way we can be together openly. I want to be your Luna, the Luna of the pack, not someone who’s pushed around like I am now.”

Carmen gave her a cool look, then ripped the bondbreaking deal into shreds and tossed it into the trash

I don’t love her, but I have a responsibility to take care of her. That was my grandmother’s dying wish. No matter what tricks Liora used to become my mate, I won’t break the mate bond with her. But don’t worry, Evelynne. I won’t let you be wronged. If Liora dares to use any more of her dirty tactics to hurt you, I’ll pay her back a hundredfold.”

A trace of coldness flickered across Carmen’s eyes. Evelynne, delighted by his words, nodded sweetly

But when she was unnoticed, the beautiful Evelynne glared resentfully at the torn bondbreaking deal. She had come here to become Luna. If she couldn’t achieve that, then what was the point of everything she’d done up to now

In the days that followed, no one took the bondbreaking deal seriously. Liora didn’t call constantly to disturb them like she used to. With the silence, Carmen and Evelynne enjoyed a brief stretch of peaceful, honeyed days

After Evelynne was discharged, Carmen took her everywhere. He rented out an entire ski resort for just the two of them, and even bought her a necklace embedded with the world’s largest diamond

In front of the pack members, Carmen didn’t hide his affection. He wrapped his arm around Evelynne, kissed her deeply, and declared that the woman he loved was right beside him

But even as he did all of that, he couldn’t stop himself from thinking about Liora. He imagined how furious she’d be when she found out. Just like before, the slightest provocation would send her storming back into his life to oppose him

He waited smugly for her call, for her hysterics but ten days passed without a single message or phone call from Liora

On the eleventh day, Carmen finally checked his phone, confirming he hadn’t accidentally blocked her or missed any messages. She truly hadn’t

contacted him at all

He stared coldly at the empty chat window. Beside him, Evelynne stirred awake, groggily wrapping her arms around his waist

Carmen, let’s sleep in a little longer today, okay? How about we go watch the northern lights tonight?”

These days, Carmen had granted her every wish. They traveled during the day, taking in all kinds of scenery, and tangled themselves in bed at night until Evelynne was left sore and breathless. But this time, Carmen seemed distracted. He refused her request

All day, he sat there coldly, phone in hand, checking the screen every so often. Evelynne bit her lip in frustration

That night, as usual, they were tangled together in bed. Suddenly, Carmen’s phone buzzed. He immediately paused and reached for it, only to throw it aside in the next second. It was just spam

He didn’t even know why he was angry. Was he seriously hoping Liora would message him? Was he expecting her to cry, scream, and resort to her usual dirty tricks to win him back

His face darkened. He channeled his inexplicable rage into Evelynne beneath him, thrusting harder than ever before. But the more he heard Evelynne’s sweet moans, the more his mind filled with the sound of Liora’s voice

Their sex had always felt like a battle. Liora never complained about the painshe took everything he gave her. Watching her expression twist from agony to surrender always thrilled him. He loved breaking her down, pushing her to the point where she could barely move, making her stay in bed for days

If she stayed like that forever, he might actually come to love her, even if just a little

The thought struck him out of nowhere, and even he froze in surprise

Evelynne still clung to his shoulders, but he had already lost all interest. With a sullen expression, he climbed out of bed and began to dress

Carmen, it’s so late. Where are you going?Evelynne quickly grabbed a blanket and wrapped herself in it

Wait for me, Evelynne. Liora’s acting up again. I’m going to teach her a lesson and then I’ll be back.”

He didn’t look back, just turned, walked straight out the door and drove off

The air outside was stifling. A bead of sweat slid down his temple

He never imagined that just one hour later, this would become the day he’d regret and despise the most for the rest of his life

He would come to hate the suffocating heat, the cold floor, his own indifference, and even the mosquitoes that buzzed past his eyes- because all of it would help shape the pain that haunted him forever
