Chapter 6
I wasn’t dead, though I never expected to survive.
I floated in the water for a long time until a man found me. The moment he saw my face, he made a quick decision.
“From now on, I’m your brother, Brian. Got it?”
I didn’t answer him. Instead, I grabbed his hand and asked, “Where’s my son? Have you seen him? We were together.”
My throat was so raw from swallowing river water that every word felt like a knife cutting through it.
Brian looked at me quietly and patted my shoulder. “My condolences.”
Even though Levi had died before I jumped, I still hoped for a miracle, even if it cost me my life.
But God didn’t give me that chance.
turned out people did vomit when they were deeply broken. I lay on the bed’s edge, throwing up until my stomach was empty and even bloody.
When I spoke again, my voice was even hoarser.
“Where’s he? Can you take me to see him?”
The walk to see Levi felt endless, cach step sharp like walking on knives.
I moved slowly, holding the wall for support.
He looked peaceful, his long eyelashes casting shadows on his face. Apart from how pale he was, he looked like he was just sleeping.

Chapter 6
When I lifted the blanket, the bowl–sized scar under his body reminded me of what he had gone through.
Connor was a top surgeon. Why did Levi have to die like this?
I had cared for Levi since he was born, while Connor spent more time with Minnie than with his son.
Why was he never satisfied? He even used Levi’s life for his junior to practice on. He didn’t deserve to be Levi’s father. He would taint Levi’s path after death.
I stared at Levi greedily, refusing food and drink, until Brian finally dragged me out of the morgue.
“What good does crying do? Don’t you want to avenge your son?”
His words hit me like thunder.
I was determined to make those who hurt my son pay.
“Brian, what do you want me to do? How can I help?”
Brian finally smiled with satisfaction. Then, he told me his story.
It wasn’t the first time Minnie had used her power to harm others.
Brian’s younger sister was also hurt badly by Minnie. She might have been saved, but she died less than a day after being taken to NYU Langone Health.
Since we shared an enemy, everything else would be easier.
First, I had to change from a weak housewife to an elegant and confident rich girl.
The biggest change was to stop feeling worthless. After marrying Connor,

he always said I was stupid and useless, and that dressing up was pointless.
Most of my clothes cost less than ten dollars each. But I once found his receipts showing he bought a thousand–dollar silk dress for Minnie.
I also needed to learn piano, dance, horseback riding, diving, and golf.
For someone who never tried those things, the practice was painful.
Whenever I felt tired, I’d go see Levi.
The last step was refining myself.
My foundation wasn’t bad, or Connor wouldn’t have married me, but small changes could make me more graceful.
The day I removed the gauze from my face, I added a small teardrop mole and smiled softly in the mirror.
“Levi, I’ll never let anyone who hurt you escape justice.”
