Chapter 4
“I don’t even understand why Connor would choose someone like you. Just die and get out of the way so my daughter can have him!”
The woman who appeared was Minnie’s mother, Vivian Erickson, the hospital director. She had always wanted Connor as her son–in–law, but she never expected I would be his wife instead.
I lay on the ground, begging her desperately. Soon, my blood soaked the ground.
“Please, save my son. If you do, I’ll divorce Connor tomorrow and take my son away. I won’t bother them anymore.”
Vivian kicked me aside and shut the door firmly.
“My daughter will never marry a divorced man. If she does marry, it’ll only be with a widower.”
I closed my eyes as tears mixed with the blood blurred my vision. I was scared that neither Levi nor I would make it out alive today.
If something happened to him, I’d rather crash into a wall nearby and die so he wouldn’t be alone.
Suddenly, the phone rang. Vivian stepped into the shadows with a complicated look and answered it.
“Connor? I came to check on the boy. He’s not seriously hurt. I’ve arranged for both mother and child to be admitted to the ICU.
“It’s not a big deal. Just focus on your meeting and leave this to me. The child is asleep now, so I can’t talk much.”

It seemed Connor still cared about Levi. I shouted as loud as I could.
“She’s lying! Levi is in terrible shape! She covered up the accident for Minnie!”
Connor, who had seemed unsure, immediately grew angry and cursed me over the phone.
“You have nothing better to do all day, do you? You looked down on my junior intern and didn’t want her as the surgeon. When my mentor came to see you, you even slandered her!
“If you’re unhappy with everyone, just leave the hospital!”
Connor hung up while Vivian sneered.
She dragged us back into the corner like we were garbage.
“You heard what Connor said. Trash belongs in the trash. Just wait to die and make room for my daughter.”
Bugs flew everywhere in the garbage room, and flies were laying eggs on Levi’s wounds, drawn by the blood.
No matter how much I tried to chase them away, they kept coming back.
I didn’t know how long it was before Levi stopped reacting. His body grew cold, a foul smell rose from his wound, and maggots crawled from his flesh.
I held him tightly, gently rocking him and singing our favorite lullabies. I hoped he’d call me one more time.
In the faint light, I thought I heard Connor’s voice.
I stood on my tiptoes and looked out the window. Minnie was being pushed into Connor’s arms by the crowd.

Both were blushing, and everyone around them was cheering loudly.
“Congrats to Dr. Ferguson on the discharge of her first surgical patient! Why don’t you two share a kiss?”
“Discharged? Did they mean us?” I thought. No one would guess we were left in the garbage room–just a door away.
Connor and his mistress enjoyed fame and fortune, while Levi seemed to hear his father’s voice and twitched twice before dying in my arms.
Now that it had happened, I had nothing left to hold on to.
I took off my only piece of clothing and wiped Levi’s face.
He liked being clean and would be upset if his clothes or face were dirty. But Connor hated that and said his son was being too picky.
Yet I once saw Minnie getting upset when her dress got dirty, and Connor bent down to clean it for her. Wasn’t she picky as well?
The truth was that Connor never liked me or Levi.
“Baby, if there’s a next life, choose a father who loves you.”
After cleaning Levi’s face, I tied him tightly to my back with a cloth and ran toward the window overlooking the East River.
I gave him life, so I couldn’t let him go alone.
Someone downstairs exclaimed, “Ah! Someone jumped into the river!”

Connor turned toward the window, suddenly feeling suffocated like he was being squeezed by a huge invisible hand.

But the gentle touch on his cheek brought him back. Minnie kissed him sweetly.
“Connor, my first surgery was a success. How about this as a reward?”
Connor’s heart softened. He had promised Levi a reward if he was brave during the surgery.
He planned to watch the surgery replay before heading home to take Levi to the amusement park.
Just as he started the video and was about to watch Levi’s surgery, Minnie grabbed his hand with a strange expression.
“Connor, you don’t have to do this. You still don’t trust me.”
He realized she was right. That surgery wasn’t a big deal, so he shut the video off and left for home.
On the way, he saw someone selling Ultraman toys and thought about buying some for Levi, but then remembered his son preferred oil pastels.
So, he let it go and decided to make Levi happy this time. Levi was a good kid, but Stephanie Ziegler had taken away some of his masculinity.
Still, even if she didn’t deserve much credit for raising him, she had put in effort. Thinking of that, Connor turned south to buy some cakes.
When he got home, the house was silent, and the stove was cold.
Connor felt angry. Minnie was his junior and was interested in him, but she was going abroad soon.
He had hoped Minnie would gain surgery experience and confidence before leaving, and then he could spend more time with Stephanie and Levi.

He never expected Stephanie to take their son and run away.
He was sure she’d return in disgrace within half a day.
But it wasn’t until midnight the next day that the police called him.
“Dr. Johnston, your wife and son have fallen into the river.”
