I spent a week replaying everything in my mind. I was certain Cole had been utterly heartbroken by me. It was better if I didn’t see him again. He was already in a fragile state. What if seeing me triggered a relapse? I’d never be able to live with myself. Besides, he was a prominent figure from a powerful family. He had access to the best doctors and specialists money could buy.
I spent a month in this self–deception, working as usual, until one day, the shelter’s donations abruptly stopped.
My boss came to me. “Sue,” he said, “I recall you once worked for the Miller family. Perhaps you could inquire about the foundation’s funds?”
I looked at the dogs romping happily around the facility and agreed.
wwent to the Millers‘ corporate headquarters, filled out the visitor form, and was immediately escorted by the chief assistant to the top–floor office.
I cautiously pushed open the door, only to find Cole Miller inside. “You?” I hadn’t expected him; I thought I’d be dealing with Mrs. Miller for the funds again.
“Disappointed?” He lifted his gaze to me, his face unreadable.
“No,” I mumbled, my voice barely audible.
After a long pause, he finally answered my unspoken question. “Mr. Miller is away on business. I’m managing the company for now.”
Or perhaps, Ms. Hayes, you were hoping to bypass me and speak directly with my father again?”

“I… no, I wasn’t.”
He was still so cutting. “It’s about our shelter’s donations…”
“Always about money, isn’t it? Three years later, Ms. Hayes, and you’re still just as materialistic.”
Alright, I had nothing to say to that. “If Mr. Miller is busy, then I’ll take my leave.”
“Don’t let the door hit you on the way out.”
