Chapter 10

Take a break. You haven’t even had lunch yet.”

I called Vincent back from overseeing the renovation of our new home

He offered me a grin, hoping to charm me

I’m just excited that we are about to move into our new place. I’d like to move in faster. Nights without you are quite lonely. Can you really bear letting me sleep on an empty bed, Debra?”

I raised an eyebrow. What is there to bear?”

I tried not to giggle when I saw his sad expression

The second year after we moved into our new home, he finally reached the legal age to marry

When his birthday came, he practically dragged me off to register our marriage

The night before getting the marriage certificate, he was too excited to sleep and kept whispering beside my ear nonstop

What should I wear tomorrow?”

Is a dress shirt too plain? But a suit feels too formal. No, let me see what else I’ve got.”

The moment I held the certificate in hand, my heart finally felt at ease

I gently brushed my hand over the piece of paper

Vincent, look at how pretty my name is, while yours look totally silly.”

Chapter 10

No way!”

Feigning anger, he took the certificate away for me

and insisted he’d keep it safe

But in truth, I often caught him grinning like a fool at it when he thought no one was looking

Years after we were married, I discovered an old photo on Vincent’s phone

It was a photo of us

I looked so young in that photo. It was taken during my days as a bar singer. Vincent’s face still had a softness then, and he was a bit on the chubby side

But the way he looked at me was so pure and passionate

Suddenly, I remembered I had a loyal audience member back then

Every time I performed, he would sit alone in a secluded corner

And when I turned to meet his gaze, they were always sparkling

I was a little bummed when he stopped turning up for a time

I never imagined it had been Vincent all along

When he returned home that night, I tugged on his ear and demanded, You fell for me at first sight and have been conspiring ever since, right?”

He instantly begged for mercy, but his face was lit up with relief from no longer needing to pretend

Yes. Debra, I’ve always been your number one fan.”
