Chapter 2
Mira bared her teeth in a mocking smile.
“Ms. Sutton is right, but let me tell you–as a woman who values her dignity, knowing when to walk away is the only way to part on good terms.”
Selene cut her off without missing a beat.
“That may be true, but after all these years of Preston tormenting me, it’s not too much to ask him to meet a few of my conditions before the divorce, is it?”
The crowd burst into laughter again.
Everyone knew what was going on.
This was just another one of Selene’s schemes.
Even Preston thought so.
He smirked, about to say something, when a few clueless young men asked Selene for her number.
Preston, amused, kept his mouth shut, curious to see what Selene would do.
But instead of turning them down, Selene asked their names herself.
Preston frowned, scoffing coldly, “You must really be desperate.”
Selene shot right back, “At least I’m cleaner than you.”
Preston clenched his fists, grinding out, “After the divorce, I’ll marry Mira

right away. Let’s see what tricks you have left.”
Selene smiled faintly, but what he didn’t know was that these fifteen days would be their last.
As soon as she got home, Selene received a call from Preston.
His voice was rough, carrying a trace of fatigue.
“What are your conditions?”
Seeing how eager Preston was to cut ties, Selene lowered her gaze and answered honestly.
“Five conditions. If you meet them, I’ll never bother you again.”
Preston’s mocking laughter echoed through the phone.
Clearly, he didn’t buy her promise.
He replied with a careless “Yeah,” unable to hide his impatience. “What’s the first one?”
Selene let out a dry laugh, but this time she didn’t argue.
“The first one–I want you to throw me the grandest birthday party in all of New York.”
Preston snorted, ridiculing Selene’s little ploys.
Selene didn’t care. She thought back over the past 25 years–every single birthday party of hers had been ruined by Preston.
Preston agreed without hesitation.
After hanging up, Selene clutched her chest, gasping for breath, sweat beading on her forehead. She fumbled for her painkillers and swallowed a

That night, her phone rang nonstop.

When she was finally woken up, Selene saw the group chat buzzing with
messages.
“Preston, is this birthday party really that important to you? You got almost every designer in New York to decorate the place.”
People in the chat joked and teased.
“What are you talking about? Wasn’t it Ms. Sutton who made Preston do all this?”
Mira pouted at Preston, “Mr. Hawley, my birthday better be even bigger than Ms. Sutton’s, or I’ll be mad!”
Preston’s tone was indulgent as he agreed without hesitation.
Three days later, the venue was ready for the birthday party.
Selene quietly watched the endless chatter in the group, then silently turned off her phone.
Early the next morning, Preston woke Selene up
Her forehead burned with fever, and she spoke weakly, barely able to get the words out.
“Preston, I’m sick.”
