Chapter 22 Good Acting
After work, Madeleine rushed downstairs to the staff canteen.
Lately, she felt hungry all the time. It was probably due to her pregnancy
Passing the reception, Madeleine spotted Madilyn, the last person she wanted to see.
Madilyn was here for Vincent, but his assistant kept her out of the office.
With nowhere to vent her anger, Madilyn turned on Madeleine instead.
Madilyn thought Vincent would’ve fired Madeleine. Instead, he even promoted her.
Madeleine would do anything to stay away from Madilyn. She tried to slip past, but Madilyn stepped in front of her. “You, come with me.”
The receptionist sneered, and Madeleine was frustrated. She just managed to kill off some rumors earlier this morning. No way she was getting into more trouble now.
She was led by Madilyn to the sky garden.
Madilyn snorted. “You should know your place. Frogs don’t get to eat swans.”
Madeleine strove to keep a calm voice and a nice smile. “Ms. Deleon, swans are Class II Protected Species, and no one is allowed to eat them.”
Madilyn choked and glared at her. “I just want to warn you. Good thing you got rid of the baby. If not, you’d be sent abroad and left to die alone.”

Madeleine froze. “What do you mean?”

Madilyn smiled coldly. “In the Romero family, if anyone’s mistress gets pregnant, she will be sent abroad. The baby gets taken away from her after birth, and she will be left alone in a foreign country. She can’t come back till the kid turns 18, if she even lives that long.”
Madeleine didn’t know if Madilyn’s words were true, but her confidence,
was shaken.
Vincent never told her anything about this.
Was he hiding it on purpose to prevent her from resisting?
Madeleine took a deep breath to steady herself.
“Ms. Deleon, I’ve had an abortion. I just want to live a peaceful life like before. Can we move on? I’m sure Mr. Romero doesn’t want to bring up the past either.
Madilyn glanced sullenly at Madeleine’s still–flat belly. “If you’re keeping the baby in secret, just wait to be sent off aboard and die with regrets.”
After Madilyn left, Madeleine felt quite anxious and lost her appetite.
At the canteen, she ordered the cheapest staff meal as usual.
Just as she started eating, everyone went weirdly quiet.
She lifted her head and saw the handsome man.
Madeleine decided to bury her on the tray and pretended to see nothing.
She was sitting in a far–off corner. Vincent wouldn’t notice her here.
Kolton’s voice sounded from the center of the room. “Mr. Romero’s here

for lunch. Everyone, just enjoy your meal.”
The chatter picked up again.
Madeleine made a face. The boss was eating in the staff canteen? Seriously?
Suddenly, a shadow loomed over her table.
Vincent sat down right across from her.

It was his first time here. It was more like an inspection of the canteen and à chance to check on her.
She nearly spat out her soup.
Out of all the seats, Vincent picked one opposite hers. Wasn’t he worried about gossip?
She jumped up. “Hello, Mr. Romero. Thank you for saving me at the party. I’ll never forget your kindness. I’ll work hard to repay you and Marvel Jewelry.”
Now was the time to fake it.
Vincent curled his lips into a half smile.
Not bad. It was a shame that Madeleine didn’t become an actress.
“How’s your injury?”
“All good now.”
She grinned. Vincent was playing along without any awkwardness.
His eyes swept over her tray.

Why did she order the cheapest staff meal after receiving 32,000 dollars?
Did she love saving money that much?
“Is the food good?” Vincent asked.
“Of course.” Madeleine nodded fast. “Thanks to you, Mr. Romero, we get two salads, one mince, and one soup for just two bucks. It’s cheap and tasty.”
A cold glint flashed in his eyes.
Was she just not picky … or just stingy?
Kolton ordered a steak set for Vincent.
Marvel Jewelry had employees from everywhere, so the canteen served various kinds of food.
Vincent cut a slice of steak. He chewed it slowly and said in a low voice, “Do you have a passport?”
What?
That question hit her like a thunderclap.
Why did he ask about her passport?
Was he really planning to send her abroad?
