Chapter 5 A Secret Marriage
Vincent was Madeleine’s boss. How could she afford to go against him?
Once she crossed him, she’d get fired and end up on the streets.
But her innate stubbornness and defiance made her want to stick to her
guns.
“Mr. Romero…”
As she was about to turn him down regardless of all consequences, her phone rang. It was her mother.
“Leine, Jeff’s condition took a turn for the worse suddenly, and he’s in the ICU. Transfer me 8,000 dollars. It’ll cover for now. I still don’t know how much more we need. Think of something and scrape together as much as you can.”
Madeleine’s heart sank. In a split second, her stubbornness and perseverance shattered into pieces.
Forget about 8,000 dollars. She didn’t even have 80 dollars now. What could she do besides selling herself?
She bit her lip hard and said, her voice barely audible, “OK, Mr. Romero.
“But… Could you lend me 8,000 dollars? I’ll pay you back monthly.”
Vincent’s gaze was tinged with contempt and disgust.
He thought, “So, she does want more. She can’t wait to get money now? What a scheming gold digger.”

He tossed her a credit card. “It’s good for 32 thousand dollars a month. Use it to pay for your expenses.”
Madeleine clutched the card tightly. It was so light, yet somehow, it weighed her heart down.
She had never wanted him to cover her expenses.
She borrowed the money from him, and she’d pay him back.
Saying nothing, she lowered her head in silence.
Soon, they reached the city hall and obtained their wedding certificate within minutes.
Vincent arranged for her to live in an apartment, and Jaylene Meyer would be taking care of her while keeping an eye on her at the same time.
He said to her, “Remember–in the eyes of the others, you had an abortion. Don’t slip up.
She asked, “But I’ll show. What to do then?”
“Leave it to me,” he said concisely.
“OK.” She nodded obediently and asked no more.
Though she didn’t know what he was up to, she was on his payroll, so she could only do as he told without any objections.
He glanced coldly at her. “Don’t tell anyone about the marriage. It’s temporary, and to me, you aren’t my wife.”
“I know.” She shrugged.
To her, he wasn’t her husband either. Jefferson was the only reason why

she compromised.
Jefferson’s condition took a turn for the worse, and he needed money for his medical bills. Otherwise, she would never have backed down, no matter what.
Vincent instructed Jaylene on something and then left.
After the weekend, Madeleine went to the company.
Kristin Henson, the director of the Design Department, gave her the design proposal for the new season. “Take this to Mr. Romero.”
What?
Why her?
Madeleine didn’t want to do this at all.
The nature of their marriage determined that they should avoid seeing each other and continue their lives as usual. Why would she show up in front of him? To piss him off?
She said, “Really? Me? I’m just an assistant designer. Maybe you can get someone else to do this.”
“Why not you? You worked on those design drafts, right? Chop chop. A meeting will start soon,” Kristin said with a fake smile.
Everyone in the company had heard about her elevator encounter with Vincent. Therefore, Kristin was giving her a hard time deliberately.
She wanted to know whether Madeleine had messed with Vincent and would soon be fired or had impressed him and would be promoted.
Having no choice, Madeleine could only brace herself and go to the

“Mr. Romero, this is the Design Department’s proposal for the new
season.”
Vincent looked up and glanced at her as indifferent as ever.
“Leave it there.”

“OK.” Knowing the sight of her annoyed him, she put the proposal on his desk and turned to leave.
As she reached the door, she suddenly felt dizzy. Her vision went dark, and she instinctively reached out to grab the doorframe. However, her hand slipped, and she fell backward heavily.
