I didn’t hesitate. I threw on my clothes and
headed out, but I didn’t leave the building. Instead, I knocked on Brittany’s door.
Last time, in the hospital, Brittany had told Mark his plan was genius and that it shocked her. That meant she hadn’t known about the “test” ahead of time.
I clasped my hands together, putting on my most innocent face. “Brittany, I ordered
takeout, and then I realized I needed to see
Mark. It’s your favorite, cherry pie. Could you grab the delivery for me?”
Brittany’s face twitched when I mentioned
Mark, like she wanted to claw my eyes out. But she forced a smile. “Fine. What are best friends for? But don’t stay out all night with Mark,
okay? You know, a woman’s gotta protect her goods.”
I’d heard that speech a million times, always thinking she was looking out for me. Now, I knew she was just scared Mark and I would hook up, because in her twisted mind, she and Mark were the real couple.
I raised my hand like I was taking an oath. “Don’t worry. I promise, no going all the way with Mark until we’re married.”

That seemed to put her at ease. She grabbed
her phone and tablet and headed over to my
place.
I hurried away, not stopping until I reached my
car in the parking garage.
Last time, I’d died not understanding why Mark
and Brittany had done what they did. Now,
thinking back, it was all so obvious.
