Chapter 23
He froze for a second, and she exited the game.
Then she sank back into bed, feeling worse.
The game was supposed to cheer Camilla up, but Raymond hit
the one nerve she didn’t want to be touched.
The next morning, she went through her usual routine–makeup
and outfit. She was planning to meet her lawyer and see what
the odds were of taking over the Paxton Group. If Edward kept
refusing a divorce, she needed leverage.
But she didn’t even make it out the door. Stuart was already
there, blocking her way.
She stared at him, deadpan. “What are you doing?”
“Mrs. Paxton, Sir Paxton thinks it doesn’t look great for a
newlywed bride to be out alone all the time. They asked me to
keep you home for a few days. Hope you understand.”
Camilla’s eyes narrowed. Her brows pulled together. She looked
past him at a line of a maid and guards standing across the
doorway, their arms outstretched.

Now she knew she wasn’t going anywhere today.
“So William’s plan is to lock me in now?” she asked, looking
displeased.
Stuart offered an awkward smile and held his hands up in a
pleading gesture.
“Mrs. Paxton, please. We’re just doing our job. Whatever you
want to eat, we’ll get it. Want something to pass the time? Just
tell us. We’ll do anything you ask, just please don’t go out.””
The maid spoke up. “Sir Paxton said if you go out again, we get
sacked. We’ve all got families to feed. Please, don’t make us lose
our jobs.”
The guards nodded, standing firm.
They kept begging, and it wrecked Camilla’s mood.
She let out a dry laugh. “What if I tear this place apart?”
Stuart gave a little bow. “Sir Paxton said if breaking things helps,
go for it. He’s fine with that. Just don’t leave.”
His words threw her off. She turned around and dropped onto
the couch.
She picked up the vase on the table, then set it back down. It cost

almost 40,000 dollars, and she had picked it out herself.
Camilla sat there, rolling her eyes and trying to find a way to
strike back.
When nothing came to her, she grabbed her phone and texted
Ralph. She told him what happened and asked for his advice.
Ralph called Camilla right away.
She didn’t want Stuart listening in and reporting to the Paxton
family, so she went back to her room with her phone.
“Mr. Obrien, what am I supposed to do?”
“They lock you in. That’s illegal,” he said. “You should call the
police. None of them want that kind of trouble. So if you report
it, they’ll back off. But are you worried about how it will look on
your end?”
Camilla licked her lips, thinking.
Then she said, “I don’t care anymore. I’m done playing nice. I’m
not letting them push me around again.”
“Good. Once the police get involved, they’ll want a statement.
Just be clear. Tell them they keep you there against your will,
and make sure you say your husband and his family are behind

- it. That’ll help if the divorce ends up in court.”
“Okay. Got it.”
Right after she hung up, Daniela’s call came in.
“Camilla, hang tight. I’m on my way. They’re in the wrong this
time. If it comes to a fight, so be it. The Paxton family needs to
learn where the line is.”
Camilla cut her off. “No. Don’t bother coming over and fighting
with them. My lawyer told me to call the cops, so that’s what I’m
doing.”
