I paid the cab driver and quickly alighted from the car. Before I could take a step forward, the cab driver honked and I turned around. “Miss, unless you have very important business in there, I wouldn’t advise you to go in. It’s dangerous,” he said, his eyes glancing skeptically at the wide, doorless gate ahead.
“It’s fine,” I replied.
He released a long sigh. “Just be careful, Miss.” Without wasting another second, he drove off at great speed.}
Looking through the doorless gate, I realized it was just an open field inside, with trucks parked everywhere.
It’s morning, but someone is blasting loud music from a nearby truck. Even though I was still outside the gate, the strong stench of engine oil, cigarettes, and sweat swiftly passed my nostrils. It’s sure going to be chaos inside.§
Taking a deep breath, I walked in, but I stopped abruptly as heads turned towards me. They were daring me to take another step or warning me to leave before it was too late for me.§
I raised my hands in surrender. “I’m… I’m harmless,” I stuttered.
One of the men approached me. He studied me for a moment, then turned away.”
“You’re too innocent for this place. Leave!” he said.”
“No.”
He faced me with an offended frown. “I’m giving you a chance to live!” he bellowed.
I shook my head, my gaze determined. “I can’t leave. My mother is inside,” I said.”
His frown deepened. His offended look faded as he now looked perplexed.”
“What made you think your mother is inside?“}
“I got a text.” I pulled out my phone from my purse and showed him the text. “I don’t know the sender, though.“>
“You’re either brave,” he said slowly, “or very stupid.“}
“…”
“Whoever this person is, they want you dead, and your mother is definitely not here.“>
Who would want me dead? Fred? No, I was married to him for seven years, and from what I know about him, he wouldn’t go to such lengths just to get rid of me.”
“Well, you’re here aiready, and there’s no going back for you.”
“You just said I should leave,” I argued quietly.
*1.changed my mind.” He smirked. “You’re pretty. It would be a waste to let you leave. I can keep you around as a toy…”
“You wouldn’t dare!” a familiar voice boomed behind me – Enzo!!
The man’s eyes widened in fear. He quickly bowed his head and took a step back. Even the other men bowed too.
“Bo… Bo… Boss,” the man stuttered.
I breathed in relief as a sense of security washed over me. I turned around and saw Enzo glaring at me with disappointment. “Baby!” His voice was suddenly low.”
“Enzo, what are you do…”
“You said your friend called off her wedding. That was a lie, wasn’t it?”
There was no need to lie anymore, so I nodded, and he shut his eyes as he inhaled deeply, his fists balled beside him.
He charged forward, and I thought he was coming for me. I raised my hands to protect my face, but he landed a punch on the man instead.”
“Why did you lie to me? Am I that scary?!”
He landed another punch on the man, and this time, he fell to the ground as blood gushed from his nose.
“Why can’t you trust me and tell me what’s bothering you?!“}
He rushed to the man and grabbed his shirt, but I rushed in front of him before he could punch him again.
“Can you blame me? How can I trust you like this?” I screamed.}
“Babygirl, I…”
“You want to hear the truth? Fine, I’ll tell you the truth, I’m scared of you!”
His eyes widened in shock. “What?”
“Yes. Who wouldn’t be scared after seeing you covered in blood? You had a bloodbath last night. Who wouldn’t be scared of you after seeing you in that state?” I poured out all the fears I’d been keeping inside.
He opened his mouth to speak, but no words came out. He looked at me with so much hurt in his eyes. That’s when I realized I’d gone overboard. Even though I was scared of him, this wasn’t the right way to let him know.
“Let’s go home,” he managed to say before turning away from me and storming toward his car.
Not knowing what to do at the moment, I decided to go with him.X
The drive home was extremely quiet and fast. I was scared and praying we didn’t get involved in an accident, because Enzo was driving as if he were on the set of Fast and Furious.
My palms were sweating as I felt his anger directed toward me, but I didn’t dare apologize… My apology might make matters worse. He alighted from the car and, as usual, held the door open until I alighted too.
He slammed the door shut, then stormed inside his mansion without waiting for me or even looking back to make sure I was following
him
“What happened? Why is Mr. Enzo looking so heartbroken?” Cora asked the moment I entered the living room.
“Huh?
Heartbroken? Did my words really affect him that much?%
“Did something happen between you two? I’ve never seen him so down.“%
I sighed as I approached a sofa. “I didn’t mean to hurt him.” I sat down and narrated everything that had happened to her.%
“Oh no, you’ve got him all wrong. Mr. Enzo isn’t as dangerous as people describe him. In fact, he’s the kindest person I’ve ever known.“% “Really?“%
“Yes. He doesn’t torture or kill people without a good reason.“%
While Cora and I were still talking, Enzo came back with a bag – a one–day trip traveling bag.2
“Where are you going?” I asked.%
“I guess you need some alone time. I’ll be back when you’ve calmed down,” he replied, then left before I could say another word.2 Did I really hurt him so much? Was Cora right when she said he’s a nice guy??
