Chapter 47
Lia screams as he crashes through the door, but he ignores her.
The pups lie in a gilded cradle, their tiny bodies wriggling.
One has his golden eyes; the other, Lia’s soft brown.
But all Alex sees is Sadina’s blood on their innocent faces.
“These abominations,” he growls, voice thick with the beast, “were born of a lie.”
Lia throws herself at him, but he flings her aside like a ragdoll.
She hits the wall with a sickening thud, but

he doesn’t look back.
His hands close around the squirming pups.
Their tiny whimpers pierce his ears, but the memory of Sadina’s final howl drowns them out.
He storms through the castle, past cowering guards, past Luna’s horrified screams.
The kennels lie ahead, the scent of ravenous direwolves heavy in the air.
Without a second thought, he flings the pups into the pen.
“Feed well,” he tells the hounds, voice flat and dead.
The first yelp is cut short by a savage growl.

The carriage outside seems to pulse with phantom hea. “She’s in there… she swore to be my second mate.”
His guards exchange panicked glances.
“Bring her! Now!”
A growl tears from his throat, but it’s weak, more whimper than command.

“We must mate before the moon sets. Her heat… it’s the only cure.”
His mind spins with fragmented memories: Lia’s hands on his aching joints, the way his scars faded when she slept near.
As a guard races to the carriage, Alex strains to listen.
He imagines Lia stepping out, her scent washing over him, healing his rotten insides with the magic he’d scorned.
I’ll make her my true mate, he vows, vision blurring.
But the guard returns empty–handed, holding only a bundle of scarlet silk.
It falls apart in his grasp, revealing tattered

mhreds of a wedding gown.
M–My lord…” The guard’s voice shakes.
“There’s no one in the carriage. Just this….
Alex stares at the shreds, his last breath catching in his throat.
“How… how is this possible…”
Alex’s gurgled words are lost in a spray of tar–black blood, each drop sizzling as it hits the enchanted stone.
His body convulses.
“Find Lia!” Her voice rises to a keening wail.
But a growl from the doorway freezes everyone in their tracks.

The voice is a low.
Servants gasp, dropping their healing vials; a healer’s amulet falls from trembling fingers, shattering on the floor.
“It can’t be… Beta Mathew was-‘
“Dead?”
A figure steps from the shadows.

“Funny how silver arrows lose their bite when a mate’s love cauterizes the wound.”
Mathew’s arm wraps around my waist.
He pulls me closer.
“Unhand my mate,” he growls.
Alex’s eyes roll back, but a strangled growl
