Chapter 25
Felicia’s POV
I’d been holed up in Kevin’s villa for days, doing absolutely nothing and still managing to feel drained. No matter how warm the blankets or how sweet the tea, I couldn’t shake the heaviness in my chest.
Kevin finally came back with news. They’d caught the one behind the hit on me.
Larissa.
Turns out she’d hired someone to kill me. Real classy. When they found her, she was hiding out in a scummy rogue den, filthy from head to toe and clutching what little money she had left. I bet she never expected things to spiral this far. She just wanted me

out of the picture so Samuel would come crawling back to her.
Instead, she’d killed the only person she had left.
When Kevin’s men raided the place, she didn’t even try to run. Too far gone. Too desperate. When they dragged her before the Werewolf Council, her face was pale with terror.
“I didn’t mean for Samuel to die!” she shrieked. “It was supposed to be just a scare -just Felicia! They messed up, not me!”
No one believed her. Not when all five hired assassins told the exact same story: Larissa paid them to kill me. Samuel just got in the
way.
He died because he chose to shield me. That

truth cut deeper than any blade.
All five rogues were thrown into prison. As for Larissa… just the charge of attempting to assassinate the Moonfang Pack’s princess was enough to seal her fate. Add murder to that, and well–she was sentenced to death. Execution, no appeals. Just a matter of time
now.
I watched the entire trial. Then I left.
Kevin didn’t leave my side after that. He pushed back his departure to the border just to stay with me a little longer.
I couldn’t explain the dread sitting in my gut. Samuel’s death mirrored the one from my past life a little too perfectly. And while I knew–logically–we weren’t trapped in the same story, some part of me still feared we were on repeat. That Kevin would go off to

the border and never come back. Just like before.
I didn’t want to lose him. Not in this life. Not ever. I didn’t even realize it until then, but I couldn’t live without him anymore.
I was staring blankly out the window when someone knocked on it. I opened it–and there he was.
Kevin.
Grinning like a smug idiot with a box of pine nuts in his hands.
“You looked like you were sulking,” he said. “Thought you might be craving these. I shelled ‘em all for you. Come on, Felicia, eat.”
He held them out, all cocky and casual, and that ridiculous gesture nearly brought me

to tears. Pine nuts. Gods. That was what cracked me?
He blinked, clearly confused by my reaction. Then he vaulted right through the window and wiped the tears off my cheeks in a panic.
“Whoa, whoa–what’s wrong? Are you that touched? I can shell them for you every day if you want!”
I laughed wetly, shook my head, then nodded. My heart ached.
“When are you heading to the border?” I asked, voice barely above a whisper.
He counted silently on his fingers. “About five days. Can’t delay any longer.”
My stomach twisted. Five days. That was all

He didn’t finish. He didn’t need to. We both 9rknew what was happening on the border-
rogue packs attacking in waves. Bloodshed was guaranteed. Survivors weren’t.

I clenched my fists and made up my mind.
“Then I’m going with you.”
He stared.

“I’m the princess of Moonfang Pack. I can fight beside everyone else.”
At that, Kevin actually laughed. Laughed. I scowled and shoved him, embarrassed.
“I’m not joking! If you die, I’ll die with you.”
His expression softened. That smirk melted into something heartbreakingly tender. He pulled me into his arms and kissed me–just a whisper of a kiss, soft and steady.
“Wait for me here, okay?” he murmured. “I swear I’ll come back to you.”
