Chapter 8
The hunt had begun.
I was flanked on both sides–Jeffrey and Elbert to my left and right, with Samuel up front. My three fiancés, surrounding me like royal guards.
Not that I asked for it.
Behind us, I noticed Larissa trailing quietly, her eyes red–rimmed like she’d just cried.
Jeffrey lowered his voice. “Did anyone else catch Alpha’s expression earlier? It was like… Kevin had to be here or something.”
Elbert nodded. “Yeah. But come on, everyone knows Felicia would never choose Kevin. Why should it matter if he’s here or not?

We’ve got Samuel.”
I stayed silent. I didn’t tell them the truth- that the one I had chosen, was exactly the one they dismissed.
Beta Kevin.
Gamma Samuel’s jaw clenched. “Enough” he said coldly.
Jeffrey and Elbert shared a quick look, then glanced back at Larissa, who was practically tearing up behind us.
Elbert sighed. “Samuel, we’re all just candidates here. Can’t blame Felicia for falling for the best one.”
“You might as well forget about Larissa.”
Samuel’s fists clenched at his sides. His

voice dropped into something cold and bitter. “I can’t.”
The words hit me harder than I expected. My chest tightened.
I was about to say something, when a sharp whooshing sound cut through the air.
“Rogue wolves! Protect the Alpha!”
Dozens of rogues burst from the treeline. Fifty? Maybe sixty? All snarling, wild–eyed, ready to kill.
“Miss Felicia, stay back!” Jeffrey and Elbert shifted in unison, their bodies contorting into their wolf forms before charging at the attackers. Samuel stayed human, firmly planting himself in front of me like a shield.

‘Samuel!” Larissa’s scream pierced the chaos.
And just like that, he was gone.
Samuel took off toward her without hesitation.
“Samuel!” I yelled after him.
He didn’t even look back.
A rogue lunged straight at me, claws out, jaws wide–no one was there to stop it.
I froze.
Until something–someone–slammed into the rogue, sending it flying.
A tall man stood between me and death,

casual as anything.
Beta Kevin.
My breath caught in my throat.
He was wearing just a simple T–shirt, and that same infuriatingly smug smile was on his face. “Hold on tight.”
Without thinking, I wrapped my arms around his waist. His grip tightened around me as he pulled a handgun from his belt and took aim, calm and steady.
More rogues emerged. Too many. They drove us toward the edge of the cliff.
Kevin–glanced back at me. “Do you trust
me?”
I met his eyes. “Yes.”

His grin widened. “Good.”
And with no more warning, he yanked me close and jumped.
We went over the cliff together.
When I opened my eyes, I was in my own bed.
“Kevin?” I shot upright–and instantly regretted it. Pain flared across my side, sharp enough to suck the air from my lungs.
“Easy!” Queenie rushed to my side and helped me sit up. “Don’t worry, Miss Felicia. Beta Kevin’s fine. Just a few minor injuries. He was discharged this morning.”
She handed me a mug of warm milk, then smiled a little. “Never thought I’d say this,

but… turns out Beta Kevin’s more dependable than he looks. He protected you the whole way down. Turns out he knew the lake was at the bottom of the cliff–said it wouldn’t kill you.”
I stared into the glass, my fingers tightening around it.
My thoughts were a mess.
Then Queenie returned, lugging a large box. “He also brought this back from Green Moss Pack. Said it was just some random stuff he picked up. Told me to give it to you when you woke up.”
The box was overflowing–makeup, designer bags, perfume, even a bag of chocolate–covered nuts.
All my favorite things.

My fingertips trembled as I reached out. Suddenly, memories from my past life came rushing back.
Kevin used to do this all the time.
Every time he traveled, he’d bring something back for me. Always brushing it off as something he’d “just grabbed on a whim.” Told me not to read too much into it.
But looking at everything now… every single item had been chosen with care. He knew exactly what I liked.
Even after he left Moonfang Pack to expand territory for our people, he never stopped sending little things back–sometimes a feather, sometimes a handful of sand from far–off lands. Always with a note.
