Chapter 34 The New Tricky Project
“Isn’t our cooperation with AC Credit going well? Why switch to another audit firm?” Peter interjected and asked in confusion, “Besides, Harrison Credit is only a recently established small

company. Letting them handle the Compton Group’s
complicated financial structure is risky. If something goes
wrong, things will get tricky.”
Without answering Peter’s question, Trystan said to me, “Take a
look at these documents. Find Devan if you have any
questions.”
took the documents from him without saying anything, but I shared the same worries as Peter. Hesitating for a moment, I finally decided to say it out, “Mr. Compton, I was previously in charge of construction. Hi Tech is an electronic technology company. Also, I’ve never once handled the company’s audit. Devan has always been handling these things, so I think it’s better to let him continue the job.”
Trystan glanced at me as he frowned. “Ms. Carson, are you clear about your responsibilities as a director?”
I was slightly stunned. I nodded at him and said, “I am, but…”
“No but. Since you’re a director as well as a potential
shareholder of the company, you are entitled to familiarize
yourself with everything in the company.”
With that, Trystan looked at Peter and began giving him orders.
ments I knew that there was no way for me to

I held the documents. I knew that there was no way for me to
back out of this. I realized that the workload this time was
unusually heavy.
Back in my office, I called Ann and got her to make the arrangements for me as complete and perfect as she could. During this period of time, we had to observe Hi Tech’s market, so we would probably become very busy in the upcoming days.
I was now in charge of the company’s audit, so I went to the Finance Department to check things out. I was shocked to find
that the internal audit had already begun.
Becca Downey, the person in charge of the Finance
Department, handed me all the company accounts. “These are
all the accounts up until now, Ms. Carson. Take a look. Mr.
Robert’s companies will also be audited by us this year, so the
workload will be heavier. Mr. Compton intends to let Harrison
Credit handle the audit this year!”
Flipping through the ledgers, I nodded and felt a headache.
“Alright, got it. I’ll look through these first. Also, can you sort out a copy of AC Credit’s audited data from previous years for me?”
“Okay!”
After that, I went back to my office with the documents. Ann
had settled everything. When she came in, she saw me burying

my head in a stack of documents. “Ms. Carson, the president of
AC Credit, Mr. Damon Keith, just called. He wants to meet with
you!”
Money always mattered. If AC Credit and the Compton Group
stopped collaborating, AC Credit would probably lose millions of money. Hence, I wasn’t surprised that Damon was anxious to
meet me. However, Trystan wanted to end their collaboration.
Perhaps something happened in between which I wasn’t aware
- of. Anyway, I had no time to spare for Damon.
I looked at Ann and ordered, “Just tell him I’m busy. One other
thing. Contact the president of Harrison Credit. I need to meet
him. Look up the companies that were recently audited by
Harrison Credit as well.”
“Okay!” After Ann left, I buried myself in those documents
again.
In the blink of an eye, it was already late in the afternoon. My
back was sore, and my whole body felt stiff from sitting for so
long. I stood and walked out of my office, finding that there was
no one in the office area.
I got myself a cup of coffee and went back to my office,
planning to order takeout. It seemed that I had to stay here and
work overtime today.
Chapter 34 The New Tricky Project
“Still haven’t gone home?” Someone disrupted the silence. I was
slightly startled. I looked up and saw that it was Lanny.
I smiled involuntarily, “Well, you haven’t left yet either.”
He smiled lightly and handed me the lunch box in his hand.
“The soup was just prepared by Dane. It’s good for your health.”
I was surprised as I peered at him. “Thank you.”
We weren’t familiar with each other, so I thought that he would
leave right after this. To my surprise, he remained standing
there. For a while, I didn’t know what to say to him, so I
remained silent.
“Did Trystan let you be in charge of the company’s audit this
year?” He found a place to sit down and asked me.
I nodded and said, “Yes. I don’t have much experience with this,
so I really felt it was troublesome.”
He seemed to fully agree because he nodded quite a few times.
“It has only been one year since the company was listed. There is
a huge difference between this year’s audit and those from
previous years. A slight mistake will cause the stock price of the
company to go down. In fact, many companies go bankrupt
every year due to errors in annual audits.”
Chapter 34 The New Tricky Project
He was serious when saying these things, so I put down my
work and glanced at him with a serious expression. He
continued, “Furthermore, the audit company has been switched this year, so you have to be extra careful.”
He was reminding me. I knew.
“Trystan knows that auditing isn’t my strength. Why did he still let me be in charge?” A single mistake would cost the entire Compton Group. The risk was too great, so I just couldn’t figure
out Trystan’s intentions behind this decision.
Lanny straightened up and looked at me. “If you do this right,
the shares Arnold left for you will be legally transferred to you.
You’d possess all the rights to those shares. By then, you
wouldn’t just be a director. You will become a partner of the
company.”
After a brief pause, he adjusted his clothes and continued, “But
if you mess this up, the Compton Group will be in trouble. Then
you might face the risk of leaving the company forever.
I frowned tightly. For a while, I didn’t know what to say.
What was Trystan doing? Betting the whole Compton Group on
me? Or…

I didn’t allow myself to think of any other nonsense and closed
the ledger in my hands. As I took out the soup he had brought, I
glanced at him and asked, “I’ve taken over the case regarding Hi
Tech, but why does Trystan want me to keep tabs on Orbit
Tech?”
Lanny frowned slightly, seeming to be in contemplation. After a
while, he said, “Hi Tech had some problems with its cash flow,
so it was acquired by the Compton Group. At first, Peter had
been managing it. But it has been handed to you. Perhaps
Trystan wants you to learn more about new technologies. After
all, there are policies in place. Soon, the country will support the
development of the Internet and tech companies. In the future,
the Compton Group might mostly concentrate on new
technologies, so he might want you to familiarize yourself with
these things in advance.”
He added after a pause, “As for Orbit Tech, perhaps Trystan has
plans to acquire it in the future. He told you to keep tabs so that he could learn about its potential for future development.”
I nodded and took a few sips of the soup. It was quite good. I
looked at him and expressed my gratitude. “Thank you for your care recently.”
He smiled and got up to leave.

He smiled and got up to leave.
“Are you going back?” I asked and looked outside. It was getting
dark.
He nodded and replied, “I have a gathering later in the night.”
I nodded, feeling a little disappointed. I initially thought that we could have late–night snacks together later if he had the time.
After he left, I finished the soup and continued to go through
the documents until my butt screamed for me to stop working
and leave for the day.
Before I started my car, I got a call from Lexie.
I checked the time. It was already ten o’clock. As soon as I
answered the call, Lexie’s voice immediately came. “Babe, guess
where I am now.”
Hearing the bubbling excitement in her tone, I thought for a
while and then answered, “Jettes City!”
“Damn!” she cursed. “Evie, you’re really boring!”
I could tell that I guessed it right when I heard her words. I teased her over the call with a smile, “Today is not your first day knowing me, right? So how’s it going? Have you found a
