Chapter 31 The Conflict Begins
However, then I could no longer suppress the nausea rising in
my stomach and began to dry heave. Without a second’s delay, I
ran to the bathroom and emptied my stomach of its contents.
Then I felt even worse.
“Does it taste bad?” A cold voice from behind reached my ears,
and I froze. Looking over my shoulder, I saw Trystan standing
by the door.
I hurriedly shook my head. “It’s nothing like that. Maybe after
going a whole day without food, my stomach couldn’t handle it
when I finally ate something, and I felt a bit nauseous.“”
He helped me up and pulled me upstairs, making me slightly
stunned.
“What is it?”
He took off his suit. changed into casual wear. glanced at me.
and said, Change your ciotnes. I take you out to eat whatever
you want.”
I was taken aback for a second and then quickly objected, “I’m
not hungry, so I won’t be able to eat even if we go out. I’ll skip.”
However, my words seemed to fall on deaf ears, because he
stared at me and said in a tone that left no room for discussion,
“I’ll wait for you outside.”
To be honest, I really wasn’t hungry at all, but…
After pondering for a while, I still changed my clothes and went
out with him.
It was around 8 o’clock, and River City was buzzing. While Trystan was driving, he glanced at me and asked, “What do you feel like eating?”
I thought about it before answering, “Something light.”
It might be because morning sickness was starting to hit me. Anyway, I constantly felt nauseated by certain odors.
He nodded slightly. As I studied the gentle look on his handsome face, I suddenly realized that this was the most peaceful day Trystan and I had shared since the day we got married.
For a transient moment, I deluded myself into thinking that this
could stay forever and that our family of three could live
happily ever after. How great would that be?
The car stopped in front of Moongarden Restaurant. I got down
and went straight into the restaurant to find us a table and saw
that there weren’t many people inside. Perhaps it was because it
was night.
As soon as I sat down, the waiter handed me a menu. Since
Trystan had already eaten, and I was having an upset stomach, I ordered some light bites and a set of pumpkin soup.
To my surprise, after Trystan parked the car, he came in with Janet and Peter flanking him.
Was it a coincidence? Or did they agree to meet here?
Seeing that I was already seated, they came over to join me. When Janet saw me, there was a subtle change in her
expression, yet she didn’t make any remarks, since this was a table for four.
I was already seated, and Janet sat down next to me before Trystan could. She peered at me and asked in a voice as sweet as nectar, “You don’t mind me sitting beside you, right, Evie?”
Could I say that I did?
Of course not.
Therefore, I remained silent.
“What did you order?” Trystan asked me as he took the menu
from the waiter.
“Some small bites and a set of soup,” I said.
He nodded and ordered a few more dishes. Meanwhile, Peter
pursed his lips and complained, “Don’t order anything for me,
Trystan. I don’t have an appetite.”
Trystan nodded, and then he gave the menu back to the waiter.
Thereafter, the three started to chat. I couldn’t chime in, so I
simply stayed silent.
The waiter brought over a set of pumpkin soup after a while.
The moment he placed it on the table, Trystan naturally pushed
it toward Janet and said in a deep voice, “I ordered it for you. Eat
some. It’ll warm you up.”
Janet beamed and said, “Pumpkin soup is my favorite. You
really do know me best, Trystan.”
I felt that the chemistry between them was like a knife stabbing
straight into my heart.

He remembered many things about her, including the tiniest
details. His bone–deep affection toward her was something I
could never earn even if I were given a whole lifetime to pursue
- it.
“Evie, what soup did you order? Why don’t we share? The
pumpkin soup here is so good. Trystan used to bring me here a
lot, so I know! Without waiting for me to reply, Janet had
already pushed the set of soup in front of me.
I shook my head and pushed it back with a smile, saying, “I
ordered a set, too. It’ll be here soon.”
She shrugged and continued chatting with them, making me
feel slightly left out.
Soon, the small bites and the soup I ordered were served. Janet
noticed that I had ordered pumpkin soup too and smiled
innocently at me, “It looks like you like pumpkin soup as well,
Evie. Let me tell you a secret. Trystan makes the best soup!”
As she spoke, she leaned so close to my ear that I could feel her
breath on my neck. I didn’t like it when others came too close to
me, so I shifted slightly with a frown.
Suddenly, my half–eaten pumpkin soup was spilled all over me
for some reason, making a complete mess. I exclaimed.

The soup was hot, so I stood up reflexively, but I accidentally
bumped into Janet, who was leaning close to me. Following that
was her whimper of pain.
The blistering pain from getting scalded was so unbearable that
I couldn’t be bothered to apologize. I hurriedly reached out to
grab a piece of tissue to wipe the soup on my legs. I came out
with nothing but a dress because Trystan was urging me before
we left the villa. The dress was thin, so my skin was already
scalded red.
After wiping most of the soup from my legs, I looked back only
to see that Trystan was half–kneeling in front of Janet to wipe
her bleeding nose carefully.
I figured that I must have knocked her nose when I got up too
abruptly just now, so…
Peter grabbed a tissue, handed it to Trystan, glared at me, and
spat, “Are you always such a klutz, Ms. Carson?”
I felt momentarily at a loss for words.
Looking at Janet’s swollen eyes and bleeding nose, I endured my
heartache and said, “I’m sorry, Ms. Reese!”‘
I was certain that I didn’t touch the set of pumpkin soup before
this happened. Other than Janet, the closest one to me, I couldn’t
the soup toward me.
“It’s fine, Evie. Just be more careful next time,” Janet said and then turned her red–rimmed eyes to Trystan. “Trystan, the soup
is spilled, and I’ve lost my appetite. Can you go for a stroll with me?”
Trystan frowned, looked at the untouched food on the table, and said, “Grab a few bites first.”
It seemed like amid the crisis, no one had ever noticed that I was scalded or even realized that the soup was spilled on me.
Standing by the side, I suddenly felt that my presence was so redundant and laughable.
“I’m leaving,” I said and then turned to leave the restaurant. I felt like my heart had been stabbed with a blade made of pure ice, the agony almost making my legs give out beneath me.
Fate was so unfair. Some women were blessed. Their wishes were fulfilled, and they were given happiness, while other women received nothing but suffering.
“Evie!” someone behind me said in a low and furious voice. I looked back and saw that Trystan had followed me out.
He looked at me with a frown, seemingly suppressing his anger

when he asked, “What are you doing?”
I thought, “What am I doing? Is that accusation I’m detecting in
his tone? Is he accusing me of knocking into Janet?”
“I don’t have an appetite, so I’m going back.” Feeling miserable, I
didn’t want to say too much for fear of losing myself and ending
up airing my grievances to him.
He strode toward me with a sullen look on his face. “Evie, is that how you were brought up?”
I raised my head when he grabbed my wrist, my eyes colliding with his icy ones. As we stared at each other, a humorless smile abruptly stretched across my lips. I said, “You’re talking to me about upbringing? Trystan Compton, what exactly is a good upbringing as you perceive it? Taking care of another woman in front of your wife and completely disregarding your wife’s feelings? Is that it?”
