Chapter 25 He Can Tell I’m Pregnant
“Is that your solution?” Trystan suddenly asked. His voice and
eyes were so chilly that I got frightened.
“Yes.” I had it all planned out. Now that I had a reason to quit, I
could finally leave River City.
The tall man stood in front of me, letting out a cold chuckle and
and signed the divorce papers, and now, you’re about to quit
your job. What are you up to, Evie?”
My palms began to turn sweaty. I instinctively stepped
backward as I was enveloped by his breath, and he grabbed me
by the waist abruptly. “Are you planning to leave River City? Where are you going to?” he asked, staring at me with his sharp
eyes.
“No!” I immediately denied it. Then I looked up at him. “You’ve always wanted me to sign the papers, right? Now that I’ve signed them, you can finally be with Janet. What is wrong with that?”
“Good!” he smiled even more coldly as his grip on my waist
tightened. “You know how much I hate it when others do as
they please, Evie. Do you think I’d let you off so easily after you killed my baby?”
“But you didn’t want the baby.” I frowned, feeling increasingly bewildered. “Janet kept threatening to kill herself. I’d take things into my own hands instead of being coerced into getting an abortion!”
Silence filled the office. As Trystan narrowed his eyes, I had a feeling that I was facing a vicious lion, and if I made one wrong
“You’re smart, aren’t you?”
I didn’t know what he meant, but I knew very well it wasn’t a
compliment.
“Evie, stop with those tricks. You’ve already gotten rid of the
baby, and that’s fine. We’ll just have another one.”
With that, he walked away. I remained frozen in place in a daze.
Perhaps these would have been soothing words if they came
from some woman’s loving husband, but not him. No way.
“What are you waiting for? Let’s go,” he said coldly, turning
back to look at me.
I didn’t know what to do at once. I nodded and trotted over to
him.
After leaving the company, Trystan took me to a huge
courtyard with a restaurant within it. Upon entering the yard, a
woman in a fancy gown walked toward us. She looked at him
and smiled, “This way, please, Mr. Compton.”
Then she brought us past the yard into a room. There, I saw
Lanny and Peter having a chat over some tea.
After leading us into the room, the hostess left. Trystan walked
over to a chair next to them and sat down, looking calm. “Why
haven’t you ordered?”
“It takes a while before Mr. Truman makes the soup,” answered
Lanny before turning to me. “Are you hungry?”
After a pause, I shook my head.
Peter disliked me, and he was irritated by how Lanny treated
- me. “She isn’t that delicate. It’s just an abortion. Why did we
have to go out of our way to get a world–renowned chef like Mr.
Truman to cook for her? What a waste.”
It sounded like Dane Truman was a great chief. Lanny wanted to stop him, and I smiled and beat him to it, saying, “The view here is nice. I’ll go take a walk.”
My words were meant for Trystan and Lanny.
Trystan glanced at me and said nothing. “The courtyard is impressive. Go take a look,” Lanny suggested. “There is also a bonsai garden next to the yard. There is a pool with many fish in it.”
I smiled, thanked him, and headed outside.
“What’s wrong with you, Lanny? Why are you caring so much about that woman? Have you lost your mind? If she hadn’t
Trystan would’ve long been happily married by now.”
Peter said so. I couldn’t help but hear them even though I didn’t
want to. After all, his voice was so loud, and pretty much
everyone in the courtyard could hear him.
Not wanting to hear his words anymore, I picked up my pace. It
was indeed a different sight as I walked out of the courtyard.
Considering how this huge courtyard was located in the heart
of a glamorous place like River City and even had an enormous
plot of land for planting an array of greenery, there was no
doubt that the owner of this restaurant was filthy rich.
As I strolled along the pebble path, I spotted a man in his mid-
thirties plucking some branches with a child next to him.
I walked closer to them, and the man saw me. “Hello,” he
greeted, dropping whatever he was doing.
I smiled, too, “Hi.”
The child, who seemed to have just learned how to walk, began
trotting over to me. He seemed a quite friendly kid who could
be friends with others easily.
He couldn’t speak yet, so he gave me the yellow flower he was
holding while blinking his big eyes.

I was instantly happy and couldn’t help but want to pick him
up, only to be stopped by the man. He said, “Be careful. He’s a
playful one. You may easily get hurt now that you’re pregnant.”
I stared at the man in disbelief. “How..” How did he know I was
pregnant?
I didn’t ask the question out loud.
He said, “No need to be surprised. I know a little about medicine
and could figure that you’re pregnant from the way you
subconsciously held your belly while walking.”
I nodded, feeling impressed.
“The courtyard is really unique,” I remarked. “It’s like a
vegetable garden.”
The man couldn’t help but chuckle. He then corrected me,
“Well, to be exact, this is a medicinal herb garden. There are
over two thousand different species of medicinal plants here.
Some of them are on the brink of extinction, and they’re being
cultivated here.”
Feeling stunned, I observed the surroundings carefully. Indeed,
there weren’t many vegetables here, but there were lots of
unrecognizable plants as well as an unusually tall cactus.

“This place is called Herbal Garden. River City is the most
suitable area in the whole country to cultivate these plants, and
that’s how the Herbal Garden became the center of the
medicinal herbs in the country. There aren’t many, but every
species is being preserved.” After sorting out the branches he
had plucked, the man was about to leave with his child.
I nodded and started to observe as I watched him and the little
boy walk away.
Suddenly, the man stopped and called out to me, “Don’t be here.
for too long, Mrs. Compton. Some herbs here aren’t good for the
child.”
Feeling taken aback, I returned to my senses only after they had
walked far away. Did he know who I was?
Soon, Trystan came out and saw me kneeling by a stream
looking at ants. “Let’s go,” he said suddenly while standing next
to me.
I was so focused on looking at the ants that I nearly slipped upon hearing his voice. Thankfully, he held me up with his quick
reflexes.
“Tired of living?” Trystan asked, frowning.
I came back to my senses and smiled at him sheepishly, “I spaced
out.”
Fie turned and walked away without a word.
I couldn’t help but feel that Trystan had been treating me
differently for the past few days. It seemed that he was less cold
to me.
Following him from behind, I mustered up the courage to ask,
“So, Herbal Garden isn’t actually a restaurant?”
“No,” he said, clearly not interested in continuing the
conversation.
