Chapter 8 Trystan’s Demand
With a snort, Delilah said, “Trystan is indeed an ungrateful man. Arnold treated him well over the past few years for nothing.”
“That’s enough!” Baldock glared at her and then cast me a glance. He said to me, “It’s late. Arnold’s funeral is over. You can go home and have a rest.”
“I see. Thank you.” Delilah and Baldock were both in their fifties. They had no children and lived quietly on the Compton Group’s shares.
Delilah could be considered sarcastic, but she wasn’t a bad person at all. They were a loving and happy couple, envied by many others.
As they walked away, I stood in front of Arnold’s grave, still deep in thought. As Arnold had passed on, my marriage to Trystan was about to end soon.
I would lose him, just as the wind and rain would finally stop and the sun would finally set.
“Grandpa, I’m leaving. I’ll visit you later.” I bowed sincerely before I spun on my heels to leave. It was then that I was shocked.
When did Trystan come here?
He was dressed in black, his expression thunderous. He stood a little distance from me, gazing at Arnold’s gravestone with his deep eyes. I could not perceive the thoughts that ran through his mind.
When I turned around, he withdrew his gaze and said in a husky voice, “Let’s go.”
Did he come to pick me up?
I stopped him hastily just as he was about to depart. “Trystan, your grandpa is dead. Why don’t you let bygones be bygones? He has sacrificed a lot for you over the years…”
Seeing his gaze darken, I stopped my words hesitatingly.
I expected him to fly into a rage, but he merely turned away and left without a word.
I followed him out of the cemetery, and it was getting dark. The driver who had brought me here had left due to Trystan’s arrival.
Left with no other option, I got into Trystan’s car. He started the engine and drove away. It was deadly silent in the car on our way back. I clenched my hands and wanted to ask him about Janet, but I thought it best not to do so whenever I saw his dark expression.
After a long while, I couldn’t help but ask, “How is Ms. Reese doing?” Although I didn’t push her, I thought I should ask about her situation as I was present when she fell down the staircases.
The car left an ear-splitting screech as it came to an abrupt halt. I was thrown forward by the force of it. Before I could react, Trystan grabbed me by the waist, pinned me down in my seat, and half-leaned over.
He glowered at me icily with his black eyes. Keenly detecting a sense of danger, I shrank and quickly said, “Trystan…”
In a cold voice, he mocked, “What do you want her to be? Evie, do you seriously think that I will change my mind about divorcing you just because of the box my grandpa has given you?”
My heart skipped a beat. What an able man he was! It was only a few hours after I got the box, but he had found it out.
“I didn’t push her.” I met his gaze and held back the bitterness in my heart. I found it ridiculous. “Trystan, I am completely unaware of the contents inside the box. I never intended to use it to threaten you into staying married to me. Since you want a divorce so much, I’ll fulfill your wish. Let’s get one tomorrow.”
It was now fully dark. I could hear the wind blowing and the rain splashing outside the window. A heavier silence hung in the air.
Trystan seemed stunned that I had suddenly agreed to divorce him. After a brief pause, he sneered, “Janet is still in the hospital. Are you planning to get a divorce and then get away unscathed?”
“What do you want me to do?” As his beloved was in the hospital because of me, it was self-evident that he wouldn’t allow me to leave so easily.
“You have to take care of her from tomorrow,” he straightened his back and said, his fingers drumming on the steering wheel casually, and his eyes turning gloomy.
