Chapter 10
Just as I was about to step forward, a shrill voice rang out behind me.
“Jaxxon?”
Bethany rushed past, grabbing onto Jaxxon’s hand, which was still clinging to the bridge railing.
“My sister is dead, and now you want to abandon me too?”
A flicker of disgust crossed Jaxxon’s face, but he couldn’t shake her off.”
“Let go!” he growled.
But Bethany only smiled–an eerie, twisted grin–as she gently caressed her stomach.
“Why are you ignoring me, brother–in–law? You’re really going to abandon me and our baby for that slut Megan? Are you planning to let your child be born fatherless?”
Jaxxon turned away silently.
Something in Bethany’s face snapped. Her expression contorted, and she suddenly screamed hysterically, “I hate you! Jaxxon, it’s your fault my sister died!“}
Before anyone could react, she swung her phone and slammed it into Jaxxon’s hand gripping the railing.
“Aahh-!”
He let out a cry of pain, his fingers loosening instinctively.
And in the next breath, he fell–like a puppet with its strings cut, his body plunged from the bridge into the river below.
A massive splash followed by stillness.
The water swallowed him whole.
Rescue teams immediately sprang into action.}
Bethany stood frozen with a dazed expression. When the police moved to restrain her, she was still muttering under her breath, “He didn’t love me… he deserved it…”
My knees gave way beneath me.
Jaxxon’s final expression kept flashing before my eyes–so terrified, so desperate, his eyes locked onto mine like he still had something left to say.
Then I remembered the look on his face a month ago–cold, detached–as he handed me the divorce papers.
A storm of conflicting emotions churned inside me.”
My vision darkened, and the last thing I felt was Alec’s strong arms catching me as I collapsed.”

Three days later, I woke up in a hospital bed.
Alec was sitting beside me with panda eyes and swollen lids. The moment I opened my eyes, he lunged forward and pulled me into a crushing hug.
“Wife, thank god you’re awake! What happened to Jaxxon wasn’t your fault. It was Bethany–she pushed him. It has nothing to do with you.”
“You did everything you could,” he continued gently. “You tried to save him. You didn’t hold a grudge. But Bethany… she was his karma. He couldn’t outrun it. Sometimes, you just have to believe in fate.“}
“Stop.” I pulled away slowly, my voice raspy. “Why should I feel guilty? He brought it on himself.”
Alec froze for a beat. Then, as he saw I wasn’t just putting on a brave face, his tense shoulders finally relaxed.”
A long silence passed. Then, he leaned in with exaggerated pitiful eyes.
“Our wedding has been postponed,” he said with a pout. “Think you can make it up to me?”
I blinked, confused. “Make it up how?”
Before I could react, everything went dark.
He covered my eyes with one hand and kissed me softly on the lips.
“Of course,” he grinned, “with a sweet kiss from my lovely wife.”}
When the kiss ended, he cheekily grabbed my hand and pressed it against his abs.
“I’ve been doing push–ups every day during your hospital stay to stay in shape. I know you’ve been drooling over won’t let you down.”
I rolled my eyes and gave him a hard pinch.
body. Don’t worry. I
…Okay.
I had to admit–he did feel pretty solid.
