Chapter 90
“Megan…” Jaxxon’s voice trembled through the speaker, choking with tears. “Please… come back to me. I really can’t live without you.“>
I was about to hang up when his next words froze my hand midair.
“I can’t go on living.“}
That line again.}
Two years ago, it was those same words-“I don’t want to live anymore“-that softened my heart and made me turn back.
And what did I get in return?}
Wounds, deeper betrayal, pain layered upon pain.
“Jaxxon,” I let out a cold laugh. “Do you really think I’m that easy to fool?”
“Weren’t you the one who wanted to run off with Bethany and live happily ever after? I let you go, and I gave you what you wanted. And now you’re in front of me again, threatening to die? What the hell do you want from me?”
My voice grew sharper with every word. “Your life is yours, Jaxxon. It has nothing to do with me.“}
Alec suddenly took my trembling hand into his, his warm palm steadying me like an anchor in a storm.
Jaxxon was crying so hard his voice shook.
“Megan… I don’t want Bethany anymore. She’s a devil! All these years she’s used my guilt toward Rhea to manipulate me, to take and take without end.”
“The one I’ve always loved is you. I regretted marrying Rhea the moment I did. When she died, I wanted to die too. But you saved me, remember?“)
“So just this once.., save me again. Please.”}
“Save you?” My voice dropped to a cutting chill. “How?”
“Marry me again,” he pleaded. “Megan, as long as you come back, I can keep going. Even if I have to spend the rest of my life buried in guilt toward Rhea–I’ll do it. I just need you.”
I was so furious I laughed.
What was this?!
An emotional blackmail in the name of love?»
So if I refused, did that mean I’d be responsible for his death?
Was I supposed to carry that burden forever?>
A bone–deep cold crept through me, and I couldn’t stop shaking.
Alec pulled me firmly into his arms and without hesitation ended the call.
“Wife,” he said quietly, “don’t listen to him. You two are over. You’re not his savior.”
Suddenly, a loud crash split the air–something heavy had landed on the deck.
The captain’s angry voice echoed across the river. “Who the hell threw a phone off the bridge?! What if it hits someone?!“}
Alec looked up with me still in his arms.
There on the bridge towering above the river–Jaxxon was leaning halfway over the railing.
Sirens wailed in the distance. Flashing lights from ambulances and fire trucks pierced the night like knives.
My knees buckled, and Alec tightened his hold around me immediately.
“Captain! Speed up–get us out of here!”
But it was too late.
Jaxxon’s eyes found me even from that height, locking onto me with unnerving clarity.
He screamed with everything he had, “Megan! I love you!“}]
“You asked me so many times and I never dared say it,” his voice cracked with sobs, “because every time I said it, I’d think Rhea died because of me!“}
“Please! Don’t be so heartless! Come back to me!”
He teetered at the edge of the railing, sobbing uncontrollably.
Above, a helicopter circled. Rescue teams tried to approach him, but he thrashed wildly, screaming, “Get away! I only want Megan!“}
Alec clamped his hands over my ears and cursed, “Jaxxon, you shameless bastard! My wife owes you nothing!”
But Jaxxon didn’t care–he just kept calling my name over and over again, like a madman.
In the end, the rescue team had no choice. They arranged for the helicopter to bring us up onto the bridge.
The moment Jaxxon saw me, he broke into a twisted smile of relief.
“I knew it,” he said. “You couldn’t bear to leave me.”
He reached out a hand to me, his voice became eerily gentle. “Come here. Leave that man. Come back to me.“}
Alec let out a mocking laugh and wrapped an arm around me, turning away without a word.
One of the rescue workers sighed, then turned to me and said gently, “Please Miss Rhodes, his life is on the line.“)
