Chapter 7
“First of all, I wasn’t mocking you,” I corrected him. “Second, in my opinion, you’re not better than Scott.”
True, Christopher had built his own career in New York, which was impressive in itself, but of course I would defend my husband. Besides, I knew Scott’s success wasn’t achieved through family help like Christopher assumed. In fact, Scott’s parents had stripped him of almost everything to toughen him up. He worked his way up from an ordinary employee to company leadership through his own efforts.
Christopher’s expression grew even darker. Ignoring his look, I continued, “I’ve never thought your ambitions were wrong. I won’t deny your achievements either. In fact, people like you are what society truly needs. But just because your choice is right, does that make everyone else’s choice wrong?”
I stared at him coldly and said, “What gives you the right to judge, or even mock, other people’s lives? Yes, you’ve broadened your horizons in New York, and you’re remarkable. But are you responsible to your family? Have you ever considered your parents? Do you think what they want is that little bit of money you send them each month?”
Before I could finish, Christopher couldn’t take it anymore. “Enough, Olivia. I didn’t come here to listen to your lectures!”
I stopped talking because he would never listen to me anyway.

In Christopher’s mind, whatever he believed was right, and no one could change that. This was something I discovered later—how important it is for spouses to share the same values.
After a long silence, Christopher suddenly said, “I won’t argue with you anymore. Olivia, I want to ask you–would you be willing to come with me?”
“What?” I was stunned, thinking I’d misheard.
Seeing my shocked expression, Christopher sighed, “Yes, I admit defeat. If you come back with me now, I can pretend these past five years never happened.”
Before I could respond, he added, “Of course, you’d have to get an abortion first.”
For a moment, I didn’t know what to say, struggling to process what he’d just said. I thought Christopher had asked me out just to show off and mock me. I’d agreed to talk with him hoping he’d stop bothering me. I never imagined he was here to ask for reconciliation.
Seeing my silence, Christopher said arrogantly, “You’re happy now, aren’t you? I knew…”
“Christopher! Are you out of your mind?” I couldn’t hold back anymore and snapped at him. “I’m married now and have a very happy family. You have a fiancée and your own career. And now you’re asking me to get an abortion and get back together with

you? Are you insane?”
Christopher’s face darkened further. I continued regardless, “Do you really not want me to be happy?”
Christopher looked somewhat embarrassed and immediately retorted, “Olivia, I know you’ve been holding a grudge against me all these years. I promise you, if you’re willing to get back together with me, I’ll go back to Texas with you and stay by your parents‘ side. How’s that? I know it’s hard to make a decision right away. I’m leaving in a couple of days—just give me your answer before then.”
“No need, I can give you my answer right now.” I took a deep breath.
Christopher seemed surprised. “You’ve made up your mind?”
“No need to think about it!” I said calmly. “Christopher, our relationship ended long ago—it ended in our past life. From the moment we were reborn, we’ve had no connection whatsoever. I don’t need you to compromise yourself, and I don’t need you to compensate me for anything.”
Christopher seemed incredulous, his tone carrying a threat: “Olivia, I advise you to think carefully. I won’t humble myself like this a second
time!”
“If that’s what you came here for today, then don’t waste any more time.” I stood up directly and said, “I never want to see

you again.”
“Olivia!” Christopher grabbed my wrist, speaking frantically.

“I’ve gone this far, what more could you possibly be unsatisfied with?”
“What have you done? Just because you said something, I’m supposed to get an abortion and get back together with you? What gives you the right, Christopher?” I raised my voice. “What exactly do you want from me? Tell me!”
Christopher said with suppressed emotion, “Isn’t it enough that I’m trying my best to accommodate you?”
I said, “I don’t need anything from you. I just need you to stay away
from me!”
“Olivia!” Christopher glared at me fiercely and said, “There’s a limit to how much you can throw a tantrum!”
I felt helpless. I knew that no matter what I said, he would never understand or get it. “Just consider me angry then. I’ll stay angry at you forever, so please stop wasting your time on me!”
Christopher seemed to break down a little, tugging at his collar in frustration, his eyes red as he said, “Olivia, do you really need me to humbly admit that I still love you?”
He suddenly calmed down and took a deep breath. Using the

gentlest tone he could manage, he said, “Come with me. Let’s pretend these five years were just a dream. We can start over. I didn’t stop loving you back then–I was just angry for a moment.”
I smiled. “Angry? No, you just realized your choice wasn’t that great after all, so now you want a do–over.”
Christopher got agitated and shouted defensively in embarrassment, “I don’t regret anything! As long as I’m willing, Madison would strip naked and throw herself into my bed!”
I looked at him with disgust and said, “That’s between you two. I told you we have nothing to do with each other anymore!”
“Stop pretending, Olivia. You just can’t accept that I left you back then!” Christopher looked smug. “I’m already making concessions
now!”
“Yes, you’re absolutely right.” I admitted it frankly. After we were reborn, during the time Christopher was away, I was indeed somewhat lost. I thought that given all those years of feelings between us, he would at least hesitate a little. But in reality, when he abandoned me to chase after Madison, he never even looked back. That’s when I completely gave up hope on Christopher. “Regardless of what you think, I hope you won’t show up in front of me again to disrupt my life.”
I forcefully shook off his hand and left without looking back.
