Chapter 3
Because he had more important things to do.
Hailey closed the movie that was playing halfway on her laptop and clicked on the Facebook icon in the bottom right corner, which kept popping up with notifications.
It was Bryan chatting with Caroline.
He didn’t know that his Facebook was logged in on the laptop, and she could see all the chats from her side.
She watched as the two of them talked from the past to the present, and then to the future.
In a long and dense conversation, Bryan never mentioned her.
Yeah, after all, it was just a substitute for comfort, there’s nothing worth mentioning.
She looked at the crowded and continuously refreshing conversation, and pressed the power button to shut it down.
A night without dreams.
The next day, Hailey was awakened by the doorbell.
She rubbed her eyes and walked into the living room, only to see Bryan, who had woken up at some point, holding a bouquet of flowers and turning around with a birthday cake.
“Hails, did you order a cake? Why suddenly craving for cake?”
The room fell silent for a few seconds before Hailey spoke slowly.
“My birthday, should have been sent by my friend.”
Upon hearing the words, Bryan froze in place.
He subconsciously glanced at the calendar on the wall and realized that it was already July 12th.
He actually forgot her birthday!
Bryan’s eyes flashed with a hint of guilt, and he quickly put down what he was holding and pushed Hailey back to the bedroom.
“Today was your birthday, we went out on a date, what would you like to eat?”
“No need, let’s just stay at home.”
Hailey rejected the proposal.
Bryan, however, insisted on going out to celebrate and handed me a dress from the wardrobe.
She couldn’t resist him, so she had to freshen up and went out with him.
Two people went to their favorite restaurant from the past and had dim sum. Then they watched the latest released movie together and went to the mall for a few rounds of shopping.
On the way, Hailey went to the restroom and when she came back, she saw him making a phone call, asking his family to help him order a very expensive necklace.
This necklace happened to be the one she had set her eyes on in a magazine half a month ago.
Watching his anxious appearance, Hailey felt a mix of emotions in her heart.
She didn’t quite understand what he was thinking in his mind.
She took a few more glances at the necklace, and he kept it in his heart; the most important birthday, however, he completely forgot.
Who is light and who is heavy, can he really not tell?

Upon further reflection, it should actually be distinguishable.
Before Caroline came back, he treated her as a substitute and was concerned about her in every aspect.
And after Caroline came back, he shifted all his attention onto her.
So he forgot everything related to her.
One morning, Hailey couldn’t seem to muster much energy and lacked enthusiasm for anything she saw.
Bryan noticed that she was absent–minded and rubbed her head. “Birthday girl, why do you seem a little unhappy? Are you satisfied with my arrangements today?”
Thinking back now, he always used to rub her head. Subconsciously, he always treated her like a sister, rather than a lover.
not
Hailey shook her head and was about to say she was tired and wanted to go home, but Bryan hailed a car and gave the address of a
mansion.
In the face of her surprised gaze, he raised his eyebrows and said, “Haven’t you always said that you want to get to know my friends? Today, everyone is free, so I’ll take you to meet them and see if that can make you happier.”
This unexpected journey left Hailey slightly stunned.
In the past, Bryan was unwilling to meet her family and friends, so she thought about meeting his friends instead. But every time, he would come up with various excuses to refuse. Over time, she never mentioned this matter again.
Now she was about to leave Northvale, and he, because of the guilt in his heart, had to take her there again.
Everything in the world, it’s all just a series of twists and turns.
She silently watched the scenery passing by outside the window and didn’t say anything in the end.
The taxi stopped halfway up the mountain.
Bryan led her into the mansion and pushed open the heavy door.
With a few bangs, fireworks and ribbons rained down from the sky. A group of people noisily squeezed out of the door, happily saying “Happy birthday.”
Seeing the situation, Bryan quickly protected Hailey in his arms, while removing the ribbons on her head and driving away a few friends who approached.
“Note, don’t scare my little girl, she was timid…”
The words were cut off abruptly before they could be finished.
He looked at the familiar face in the crowd, and his expression suddenly changed.
Caroline, on the other hand, had a calm expression on her face and greeted with a smile.
“Bry, I have been abroad for so many years and haven’t participated in group activities for a long time. I heard this morning that you are going to celebrate your girlfriend’s birthday, so I thought I would join in the fun. I hope I am not unwelcome.”
Bryan coldly scanned the surroundings, and everyone lost the courage to meet his gaze, avoiding him one by one, pretending it had nothing to do with them.
As the atmosphere was about to cool down, Hailey politely extended her hand and took the initiative to greet.
“Welcome, nice to meet you. I was Hailey.“-
Caroline stared at her for a while, as if she understood something, and then she half–smilingly held her hand.
“Hello, my name is Caroline, I was Bry’s… friend.”
“Hails, has anyone ever told you that we look a bit alike?”
