Chapter 3
By the time she finished, it was already afternoon. As she was about to hail a cab home, Hunter called.
“Lena, why aren’t you home? Where are you? I’ll pick you up.”
Not wanting him to know she was leaving, Lena gave him the address of
a nearby mall, saying she was just shopping.

Hunter rushed over and took her straight to a hotel, saying he wanted to make up for their anniversary.
As soon as they got out of the car, Lena saw a sign by the entrance with their names.
Below, it was a bold line, “9th Anniversary.
”
Hunter noticed her gaze and his expression flickered at the mistake.
“The hotel must have messed up the number. Lena, don’t be upset.”
Lena kept her eyes down, said nothing, and walked inside.
The lobby was grandly decorated, filled with guests, buzzing with excitement.
As the couple appeared, everyone raised their glasses and crowded around to congratulate them, their voices full of envy.
“Mr. Langdon, congratulations on your 9th anniversary with Ms. Steele. Wishing you many more years of happiness and a lifetime together!!!
“Throwing a party for your anniversary and inviting so many to witness your love. Mr. Langdon and Ms. Steele are truly in love!”

Lena smiled politely at their praise and glanced around the room.
Besides the wrong anniversary date, the cake on the table was mango- flavored, something she was allergic to. The flowers in the basket were wilted, and the servers kept making mistakes, bumping into guests.
Looking at the messy, sloppy scene, Lena remembered the parties Hunter used to throw for her.
Whether it was the flowers, food, drinks, or the staff’s manners and event flow, he personally inspected every detail, making sure nothing was out of place.
How could such a small anniversary dinner turn out this messy?
When another guest got spilled on, Lena finally spoke up. “Who organized this event?”
Hunter’s secretary bowed slightly and replied honestly, “It was Mr. Langdon’s assistant, Eleanor Hart.
Hearing the name, Lena’s gaze froze.
Noticing her reaction, Hunter caught on and quickly tried to explain.
“Eleanor is my new assistant. This is her first time organizing an event, so some things might have been overlooked. Lena, please don’t mind.”
Hunter was known for being strict and decisive, mistakes like this would usually come with serious consequences.
So why was he brushing it off so easily now?
Lena didn’t need to think twice. Without saying more, she headed backstage to change her dress.
She opened the gift box on the table and froze when she saw the old, tattered dress inside.

On the way here, Hunter told her the dress and jewelry for tonight’s party were ready, and they were her favorite styles.
So what was this pile of what looked like secondhand fabric?
Lena returned to the hall without changing and spotted Eleanor at once.
Eleanor wore a pearl–studded couture gown, with diamonds sparkling under the lights, drawing everyone’s attention.
She held up her dress and twirled in front of Hunter, softly teasing, “Mr. Langdon, do I look good?”
“Yeah.”
Hunter smiled, and he instinctively leaned in to kiss her. But when he glanced toward Lena nearby, he pulled back, and his voice grew oddly tense.
“Lena, why haven’t you changed? This is my assistant, Eleanor Hart.”
