Because the man was my father.
Alexander trembled uncontrollably, holding his breath, listening to the conversation between the two inside. It turned out that a
month ago, Alexander had been in a car accident. Due to his rare blood type, he desperately needed a transfusion. It was I, still holding onto a sliver of sibling affection, who disregarded the doctors‘ warnings and directly donated 1000 milliliters of blood. I only stopped when I passed out, which was just enough.
Seraphina seized the opportunity while I was unconscious, claiming credit for the transfusion. This earned her even more of Alexa- nder’s affection. Then, while helping Alexander, she subtly revealed a fake wound on her arm. When Alexander noticed, she imme- diately dropped to her knees, weeping, saying it wasn’t my fault, she just hurt herself accidentally. After Alexander gently comfort- ed her, she “confessed” the truth. She claimed they were scars from my past abuse–cuts from knives, pokes from pen tips during my years in the family. The doctor had supposedly said they couldn’t heal, only a skin graft would work.

At this point, Alexander still retained his last shred of humanity. Seeing his hesitation, my father and Seraphina orchestrated a scheme, exploiting the deeply painful memory of Alexander’s own molestation from his youth. On the day the orphanage was havi- ng an outdoor activity, they lured Alexander there using my name, then hired ten men… By the time Alexander was found, he was soiled, broken, barely recognizable as human. They even deliberately left one man behind. When Alexander was rescued and ques- tioned him, the man instantly claimed that I was the one who had brought Alexander there for them to have their way with him.
At this, Alexander no longer hesitated. He waited at the orphanage, then brought his men to tie me up. I, completely unaware, was taken to the operating table, where my skin was flayed from my body. And they did all of this not just to kill me, but to drive Alexan- der insane. Even the initial car accident was part of their plan.
Outside the door, Alexander’s legs shook uncontrollably. He bit down on his hand, desperate not to make a sound. I stood beside him, laughing until I couldn’t stop. Look, Alexander, this is the precious sister he protected for over two decades, the father he respected his entire life. Does it hurt, being stabbed in the back by the ones you love most? The day you tied me down, forced me onto that operating table, it hurt even more than this.
Seraphina’s seductive voice drifted out again. “Daddy, who do you like more? Me or Brother?”
“Silly girl,” my father’s voice purred, “Do you even need to ask? Of course, it’s you.” Then, a chilling disdain entered his tone. “Your brother is nothing but the bastard of that old hag who died years ago. Years ago, if, hadn’t seen she had money, I wouldn’t have looked twice at her. As for the two things she spawned, they both sicken me just looking at them. When your brother dies too, Dad- dy will find you a new mommy. Will you and your new mommy stay with Daddy, alright?”
“Daddy must love me the most, okay?” Seraphina cooed.
“Don’t I love you, sweetie? You said you didn’t like your sister, and I didn’t I just let you get rid of her?” My father’s voice was laced with dark amusement. “And your brother? You said you didn’t want to pretend with him anymore, so I immediately had him ruined.”
“Hmph,” Seraphina chirped, “who told them to compete with Seraphina for Daddy’s affection?”
“At first, your brother even thought about bringing Audrey back after he inherited the family fortune.”
“If you don’t like them, then give Daddy another son.”
Soon after, more sickening sounds filled the room. Alexander didn’t listen any further. Tears streamed silently down his face. His eyes were numb, hollow, as he walked back to his own bedroom. It took a long time for me to recover, my mind filled with the ima- ge of the young man who had once loved and protected me.
