Chapter 12
Owen’s breath caught.
Her eyes were too cold, as if she were looking at a stranger.
The courthouse corridor was bustling with people coming and going. Many lawyers and journalists had already noticed their confrontation and quietly stopped to watch.
Amelia gently withdrew her hand, straightened her sleeve, and said in an indifferent tone, “Mr. Hayes, please behave yourself. We are just colleagues now, and we may be competitors in the future.”
She raised her eyes slightly, her gaze as cold as ice: “And we will only meet again in court.”
After saying that, she turned around and left. Her back was straight like a pine tree, without a hint of nostalgia.
Owen stood still, clenching and releasing his fingers.
Back at the hotel, Owen slumped onto the ground, exhausted, as his phone buzzed frantically.
Melissa sent over twenty messages, with the last one being a voice message. When I opened it, I heard her voice, choked with tears: “Owen, I went to look for you, but you weren’t there… Did you go to find her? You clearly said… You don’t love her at all…”
Owen closed his eyes and, for some reason, as he listened to Melissa’s crying, he felt nothing but irritation. In the end, he simply turned off his phone.
The next day, the front page headlines of major legal media outlets read: “Shocking! Houston’s ‘unbeatable myth‘ Owen and New York’s ‘crime queen‘ Amy are actually husband and wife?!“.
The picture shows a confrontation between two people in the corridor of the court. Amelia is icy cold, while Owen’s eyes are filled with complexity.
As soon as the news broke, the entire legal community exploded.
So Amy retired for three years, did she got to be a housewife for Owen?
Was Owen blind? How could he not know that he married a legal queen?
Rumor has it that his first love was the pianist Melissa. Could it be that Amy was just a stand–in?
The public opinion exploded, with overwhelming mockery directed at Owen, while Amelia never responded.
Late at night, Owen sat alone in the bar, drinking one shot after another of strong liquor.
The bartender couldn’t help but advise, “Sir, you’ve had too much to drink…”
He turned a deaf ear until he was drunk, and in a hazy state, as if he saw Amelia sitting opposite, still gentle, softly asking him, “Owen, are you tired from work today?”
He reached out to grab, but only caught a handful of air.
Unknowingly, he had already lost the most precious person.
I went to the store yesterday and bought some groceries. After that, i met up with some friends for lunch. We had a great time catching up and reminiscing about old times. Later in the evening, I watched a movie at

home before going to bed.
Outside the New York Supreme Court, the media’s cameras and microphones had already been set up.
This was a highly publicized case of commercial murder.
Renowned entrepreneur Kamden Vasquez was accused of murdering a competitor, with a complete chain of evidence. However, the defendant. hired Houston’s “unbeatable legend” Owen as defense, while the victim’s family entrusted the recently returned “queen of criminal cases” Amy.
Two top lawyers faced off for the first time, and the courtroom was packed.
The trial began, with Amelia as the prosecuting attorney making the opening statement.
She stood in the center of the courtroom, her black suit accentuating her powerful presence, her voice clear and sharp.
When it was Owen’s turn to cross–examine, he stood up and walked towards the witness stand. His tone was steady, his logic was rigorous, and his arguments were strong. It should have been an evenly matched
contest.
Until his gaze inadvertently swept over Amelia.
She was bowing her head to look through the materials, her profile stern, her eyelashes casting a small shadow under the light.
At that moment. Owen saw a glimpse of Amelia from three years ago.
She also sat quietly at the dining table, under the warm yellow light, waiting for him to come home for dinner, and he… always ignored her.
He never lost focus in the courtroom.
But today, his mind was full of Amelia.
Her calm demeanor as she stated, the sharpness of her rebuttal towards. him, and the icy gaze she gave him….
Half an hour later, the judge pronounced: “Defendant Kamden Vasquez, guilty of murder, sentenced to life imprisonment.”
Owen lost the case.
The media instantly boiled, the flashlights flashed crazily, and the headline quickly made it to the hot search: “Myth shattered! Owen loses his first lawsuit, defeated by ex–wife Amy!”
First defeat! Will Owen lose confidence from now on?
