Chapter 38 He Actually Fell for You Long Ago
Maverick had been unconscious for half a month. During this time, I hadn’t seen any member of the Stone family except for Robert.
I heard that Philip had found a new lover and was traveling the world with her. That was why he had been unreachable.
His love for Maverick had always been this way–obsessive and controlling. Yet, whenever Maverick needed him, he was never around.
I guessed Maverick must have grown up feeling unloved.
Eva would occasionally drop by. When she did, we’d chat for a bit.
Today, as I was gently wiping down Maverick’s body, Eva showed up again.
“Ms. Quinn.”
“Call me Stephanie.”
She had always called me Ms. Quinn, but I never got used to it.
“Stephanie.”
Eva didn’t make a big deal about it and just did as she was told.
Over time, I realized that she was a good capable assistant.

Whenever Eva came over, she would bring some necessities for Maverick.
I used to handle Maverick’s things, but now

I finished wiping Maverick’s arm and began working on his leg.
While I was wiping, Eva suddenly spoke.
“Stephanie, do you know how Mr. Stone got hurt?”
I looked at her and shook my head.
“I don’t know.”
“It was from saving your parents during the fire.”
“What?”
I was stunned, unable to process this new piece of information.
“Why didn’t he tell me?”
You never gave him the chance to explain.”
Eva shrugged with a smile. “But even if you had given him the chance, he still wouldn’t have said anything. Mr. Stone said there was no need to talk about it. Even though his leg was injured, he still couldn’t save your

parents from the fire. Since he failed to save them, there was nothing worth mentioning.”
1 froze, the motion of wiping Maverick’s right leg coming to a halt.
There were two injuries on his body, and both were because of me.
“I probably shouldn’t be saying all this, but I just can’t keep it in.” Eva looked at me seriously and said, “Stephanie, Mr. Stone really loves you. Maybe he didn’t love you that much in the early years of your marriage, but I can tell–starting from the fourth year, he fell in love with you. From that point on, he began bringing you up more and more. He only wanted to eat the food you made, and he loved the ties you picked out for him. And even though he often put you down in front of us, every time he talked about you, there was a smile at the corners of his mouth.

“And I can also see that you still have feelings for Mr. Stone. Since there are no more misunderstandings between you two, why not give each other a chance to reconcile? Treasure the one beside you–that’s such a simple truth. Ms. Quinn, someone as smart as you must understand that, right?”
With that, Eva turned and left.
I turned my head to look at the man lying in bed, my eyes slowly beginning to blur with tears.
“Is that true, Maverick? You fell in love with me a long time ago?”

“Maverick, do you know that some things–once missed–are missed forever. There’s no going back.”
The moment I finished speaking, Maverick’s finger twitched, and his eyelashes fluttered.
Seeing that, I rushed out excitedly to call the doctor.
“Doctor, doctor, Maverick just moved his hand!”
When I returned to the room, a crowd had already gathered around Maverick’s bed.
Even Robert had arrived. Watching the trembling figure before me, I knew–he must be overjoyed. His most beloved grandson had finally woken up.
After checking on Maverick, the doctor stepped out. I went up to him and asked,
“Doctor, how is Maverick?”
“He’s awake now, and physically he’s doing fine. Ms. Quinn, you’ve been incredibly attentive throughout Mr. Stone’s coma–that’s why he recovered so quickly!”
“I’m just glad he’s okay.”
I nodded, cast one last glance toward the hospital room, then turned and walked out of the hospital without looking back.
After leaving the hospital, I went to find Yrian and told him I wanted to treat him to a meal.
I chose a restaurant we used to frequent when we were dating. The seat was by the window, and a soft breeze filtered through like a caress–gentle and soothing against my skin.

Yrian had rushed over straight after his surgery. He looked completely worn out.
I knew my decision to cancelled the wedding had hit him hard.
But I just couldn’t lie–not to him and not to myself.
Being with him had felt like clinging to a lifeline.

So much had happened lately. My divorce with Maverick. My parents perished in the fire. Everyone close to me had been slipping away, one by one.
And just then, Yrian had shown up. His unwavering presence, his gentle care, made me lose myself in it.
His mother kept pressing, too, and I ended up agreeing to the marriage without even realizing what I was doing.
If Maverick hadn’t shown up that day at the wedding, I would’ve married Yrian for sure.
He was a wonderful man. I knew that even if I didn’t love him now, I would’ve fallen for him sooner or later.
But fate had shut that door for good.
