Chapter 34 Will You Forgive Me?
My eyes filled with tears in an instant, and I bit my lower lip as they started falling one by one.
When Mabel noticed me crying, she became nervous too.
“Stephie, you’re not thinking of canceling the wedding, right? There are so many guests here today. If you leave now, Yrian will feel humiliated and deeply hurt.”
Her words slowly helped me calm down and think clearly again.
That’s right. I shouldn’t let Yrian down. He’s always treated me kindly, and I can’t bring myself to cause him pain.
I quickly wiped my tears and told the makeup artist to fix my look.
As she was fixing my makeup, my phone started ringing. Since I couldn’t answer it, I asked Mabel to pick it up
for me.
But after only a few words, she hung up my call.
“Who called?”
I asked, wondering since I rarely get phone calls.
اله
“It was nothing,” Mabel replied vaguely, holding onto my phone and moving a bit away from me.
Her expression was uneasy, and I knew right away that something was off.
“Mabel, was it Maverick?”
Before she could respond, the phone rang once again.
Mabel clutched the phone tightly, clearly not sure what to do.
She’s a straightforward person, and I understood she was worried something would go wrong, which was why she didn’t want me talking to Maverick.
“Hand it over,” I said.
“Stephie, you have to stay calm.”
Mabel slowly gave me the phone, and I tapped to answer it. A voice I hadn’t heard in a long time came through.
“Stephie, it’s me, Maverick.”
His voice sounded rougher and deeper than I remembered. It was nothing like how he used to speak.
Hearing him talk like that made it feel like he was really in bad shape.
“What’s the matter?”
I asked without emotion, unsure how to even speak to him anymore.
Even though I resented him, there was a part of me that still felt uneasy.

“I’m about to go into surgery. I don’t know if I’ll wake up and ever see you again. Stephie, I just wanted to hear you one last time.”
Maverick hardly ever sounded so weak. I could tell he was in pain.
My fingers gripped the phone tighter, and as I blinked, a tear slid down and landed on my arm, it actually stung a bit.
He said, “You’re marrying Yrian, right? Congratulations. I bet you’ll be the most stunning bride there.
“Stephie, I made a huge mistake.
“If I don’t make it through, will you ever forgive me?
“I swear I didn’t cause that fire. Please believe me.
“It’s true that I’m the reason the baby didn’t survive. I’m really, really sorry.”
Maverick kept speaking, his words full of regret, but I couldn’t bring myself to say anything.
Then, I heard someone in the background say, “Mr. Stone, it’s time to take you into surgery.”
He told me quietly, “Goodbye, Stephie.”
The line went dead right after, and when I tried to call back, all I heard was a busy signal.
I stared at the screen as it faded, my chest tight with sadness, making it hard to breathe.
“Are you all right?”
Mabel gently wiped the tears from my cheeks. “Stephie, the wedding ceremony is starting soon. We should head out now.”
That day, the weather couldn’t have been better. The sun was shining, but it wasn’t too hot.
The sky was a bright blue, fluffy white clouds
through the air.
slowly, and a soft wind carried a peaceful feeling
The church bells rang three times, and a flock of white doves flew off into the sky with the sound.
There was music in the air, people singing, flowers blooming, and the grass swaying. It all felt like something out of a dream.
With Mabel by my side, I slowly walked down the aisle toward the
an waiting at the far end.
Yrian looked especially charming in his white tuxedo, standing there quietly, with a warm and gentle expression on his face.
He stood there, holding a bouquet of white roses, waiting for his bride.
A joyful smile was spread across his face, and everyone around him seemed to share in that happiness.
As for me, I wanted to smile too, but my smile felt painfully forced.
In my mind, I kept hearing Maverick’s words.
“If I don’t make it through, will you ever forgive me?”
