Chapter 19 Lunch Together
Just before leaving Maverick’s office, my stomach let out a loud growl, making me feel even worse.
Maverick seemed to notice and called out to me.
“Haven’t had lunch?”
“I’ve been waiting here for you, had no time to eat.”
I couldn’t help retorting, “Aren’t you trying to torture me on purpose? Well, you got what you wanted.”
“Who’s torturing you?”
Maverick frowned. “I had a sudden overseas meeting and went to the conference room on the second floor.”
“Heh.”
I didn’t believe him and turned to leave, but he stopped me.
“My lunch is about to arrive. Stay and eat with me.
“There’s no need.”
Just then, Maverick’s secretary entered, pushing a cart laden with food.
“Mr. Stone, your lunch is here.”
I looked at Maverick in surprise. So he hadn’t been lying; he hadn’t eaten lunch either.
“Come over, sit down and eat with me.”
Maverick gave me a glance, motioning me to sit beside him.
I hesitated, then declined, “I can just go home and
eat.”
“Stephanie, have you forgotten what you came here for today?”
Maverick’s tone turned harsh. Not daring to refuse, I quickly took a seat next to him.
The secretary cast an awkward glance our way before setting the dishes on the table.
I frowned as I looked at the food.
These were the dishes I used to make for Maverick.
He often worked late, so I cooked these based on his health needs.
Many of them, he didn’t even like.
I thought after our divorce, he would stop eating these dishes. Yet here they were.
“What are you looking at? Eat.”
His tone softened as he handed me a pair of utensils.

“You knew I’d be here at lunchtime, waiting for you and not eating?”
Noticing the two sets of utensils, I couldn’t help but ask.
“After knowing you for so long and being married for seven years, do you really think I don’t understand you at all?”
Maverick lowered his head, eating without looking at me.
“Stephanie is the most stubborn person in the world. If she hasn’t seen me, she wouldn’t leave easily.”
His words made my heart flutter.
Indeed, all these years, that’s how I’ve always been.
No matter where Maverick was, if I wanted to see him, I would wait until he returned.
Even after our divorce, I was still the same.
Feeling conflicted, I shook my head, quickly grabbed a piece of pork rib and some rice.
The warm food in my stomach made me feel much better.
“These dishes aren’t half as good as yours.”
Maverick lost his appetite after a few bites. He put down his utensils, looking displeased.
“If the chefs can’t cook properly, they should all be fired. They’re supposed to be professionals, yet their food doesn’t compare to an amateur like you.”
“Really? I think it’s quite good.”
I didn’t understand Maverick’s tantrum. The food was delicious, yet he nitpicked.
“If you think it’s good, finish it all. Not a single bite left.”
Maverick stood, heading to his desk to work.
I ate until I was full, realizing it was already very late.
Maverick was still engrossed in work. Every time I came to see him before, he was always busy.
I used to love watching Maverick work, he was so focused and handsome.
That hadn’t changed.
But now, looking at him, my feelings were completely different.
“Finished?”
Noticing my movement, he looked up briefly.
“Yes.”
I nodded and stood up. “If there’s nothing else, I’ll leave. I’ll be at the Nightfall Club tonight at eight, as promised.”

“Alright.”
Maverick responded coldly before returning to his work.

He must be very busy, but since we could still communicate effectively, I hoped discussing the investment at the Nightfall Club tonight wouldn’t be too difficult.
