Chapter 6
The heavy thud echoed through the room, making everyone jump.
All eyes turned to me, wide with disbelief, like I had just done something monstrous.
For two long seconds, the room was frozen in stunned silence.}
Leigh was the first to recover. She gasped, feigning shock, then turned to me.}
“Sister Melissa, Brother Soren asked you to bring Young Master. Why would you bring an urn?“}
“Even if you’re upset, you shouldn’t curse your own son. Or ruin the Hendricks Group’s celebration like this.”
The moment they heard that, the guests turned to me with narrowed eyes and twisted expressions.
“She’s a mother, and she actually cursed her own son!“>
“People from the bottom have no ability, so they claw and scramble just to compete. They’ll sacrifice anything for a shred of pride!“}]
“Poor Young Master Hendricks. Born to a woman so deranged, what a tragedy.“}]
“Letting someone like her marry into wealth is a disgrace to the upper class.”
Their voices dripped with contempt as they edged away from me, recoiling like I was something foul, something unclean.
Aubrey clutched her chest, gasping for breath, then jabbed her finger at me with fury.
“Melissa, you, you’ve gone too far!“}
Her voice shook with rage.
“Tell me right now, where is my precious grandson?!“}
I pointed coldly at the urn on the table. “Didn’t I already say? He’s right here.“>
“Melissa, are you done making a scene?!“}
Soren glared at me, his fury snapping like a whip.
“Looks like I’ve been far too lenient with you all these years. That’s why you’ve grown so arrogant, daring to spit out such ridiculous lies!” I met his gaze head–on, my voice low and steady.
“If you think I’m lying, then investigate. Find out the truth for yourself.“}
At that, Soren yanked out his phone, rage thick in his voice as he barked into the receiver.
“Call the housekeeper. Spare no expense, track down my son and bring him back!”
After giving the order, he hung up and snapped at me.}
“Melissa, don’t think pulling stunts like this will make me believe your nonsense.”
“Once I find my son, you’ll pay for this baseless drama. And from now on, don’t even dream of seeing him again!“}]
His eyes blazed with fury, every word laced with threat. But I didn’t flinch.
“Soren, the one who should be paying the price is you.“}
At that, the business elites around us burst into mocking laughter.”
“This woman’s lost it. A powerless housewife, daring to claim she’ll make President Hendricks pay?”
“Ridiculous. If it weren’t for him, she wouldn’t even qualify to step into high society. And now she’s biting the hand that fed her?”
“First she curses her own son, now she’s throwing threats? Just the desperate theatrics of the lower class.”
Their stares pierced through me, filled with disgust, as if I were nothing but a pitiful joke.
Soren looked at me with pure contempt.”
“Melissa, marrying you was the greatest shame of my life.”}
Just as the words left his mouth, his phone rang.
Noticing the caller ID, Soren sneered and deliberately turned on the speaker so that all could hear.”
The housekeeper’s trembling voice suddenly pierced the silent hall.”
“President Hendricks, I’ve conducted a full investigation and your son indeed died the day you took him to the college entrance exam.” The room fell into a stunned silence.
Every guest froze in disbelief.
Soren’s face went pale, his expression twisting.
“That’s impossible,” he choked out. “Are you sure there’s no mistake?“}}
The housekeeper answered with assurance.
“I’ve double–checked, more than once.“”
President Hendricks, that day you left your son stranded by the roadside, he couldn’t find ride. Desperate, he ran toward the exam site and was struck by a large truck, killed instantly.”

“President Hendricks, that day you left your son stranded by the roadside, he couldn’t find a ride. Desperate, he ran toward the exam site and was struck by a large truck, killed instantly.”
Her words crashed over the room like relentless thunder, each sentence heavier than the last.
Soren’s face drained of color, his hands trembling violently as he ended the call.
Silence swallowed the room whole.}
“What… what is happening?“}
Aubrey stood frozen as if struck by lightning. Her eyes darted to the urn beside me, disbelief clouding her voice as she asked Soren, trembling.
“My precious grandson… Is he truly gone?“>
Soren said nothing, his silence heavy and unyielding.
In that stillness, Leigh’s eyes suddenly found his, tears spilling as she sobbed pitifully.
“Brother Soren, I’m sorry… It’s all my fault.”
“If I hadn’t told you I was pregnant, you wouldn’t have rushed to find me. Your son wouldn’t have died.”}
“It’s me who caused his death. I’ll make amends for it right now.”}
She moved as if to flee, her despair theatrical and raw.
But Soren, afraid to lose her, grabbed her firmly and pulled her close, his voice soft yet calm.§
“Silly girl, it’s not your fault.“}
“This was Caius’s fate.”
“I had planned to name him successor of Hendricks Group today, but his death made me realize something far deeper…“}
