Chapter 13
But if she left and didn’t come to him, where could she have gone?
Matt wax so lost in his thoughts that he didn’t notice how his sudden silence caught Edwin’s attention until his entlar was grabbed and Edvin’s face loomed inches from his mwn.
Edwin’s eyes narrowed dangerously, his voice ice cold. “You know where she is.”
In that moment, every drop of alcohol evaporated from Matt’s system. His lips curled into a malicious smile.
“I don’t know where she is, but I do know why she ran from the wedding.”
Edwin froze, his grip loosening slightly. Ile unconsciously blurted out, “Why?”
He still had no idea what was going through Sylvia’s mind.
He’d assumed she’d fled to be with Matt, but that clearly wasn’t the case. Frustrated as he was, he couldn’t help the jealousy bubbling up inside.
He didn’t even know why Sylvia ran away from the wedding–how the hell would Matt Kingsley know?
But Matt’s answer landed like a knockout punch.
“Remember the day she woke up in the hospital after falling into the ocean?” Matt’s eyes gleamed with cruel satisfaction. “Care to guess what juicy little secret I shared with her when we were alone?”
Watching Matt’s expression, Edwin could hear his own heart pounding. Anxiety and agitation twisted inside him until, in a moment of panic, he actually stumbled backward, trying to escape.
He was afraid to hear the answer.
But Edwin couldn’t outrun Matt’s words. Seeing Edwin’s attempt to flee, Matt dropped all pretense and went straight for the kill.
“I told her that you weren’t pursuing her because love–you had other motives. I told her you were actually in love with Tiffany, and you only wanted to marry Sylvia to clear the path for Tiffany. Want to know how she reacted?”
Though phrased as a question, Matt clearly had no intention of waiting for an answer.
“She wasn’t surprised. Wasn’t heartbroken. Didn’t even question it. Before I ever said a word, she already knew everything. When I saw her non–reaction, I thought she loved you so much that she didn’t care if you didn’t love her back, or even that you were approaching her with ulterior
motives.”
“I was actually jealous of you at that time.”
“But now I see I was wrong. She wasn’t overlooking it–she was just waiting for the perfect moment to hit you where it would hurt the most.”
By the time Matt finished speaking, Edwin had already vanished through the doorway, seemingly not hearing his final words.
Matt walked slowly to the door and watched Edwin rushing downstairs. That retreating figure, clearly fleeing in panic, gave Matt a surge of vindication–his words had clearly hurt him.
He felt a wave of satisfaction wash over him.
He wasn’t the only one who had wronged Sylvia, so why should he be the only one to suffer the consequences?
Besides, compared to what Edwin had done, at least his own actions hadn’t been quite so despicable.
Matt turned back to look at the mess in the private room, called for someone to clean it up, and then walked out of the club.
The cool night breeze brushed against his face as he exhaled heavily. He glanced at the number he’d been about to dial before Edwin arrived, then turned off his screen and hailed a cab.
If he wasn’t mistaken, given the wedding fiasco, Mr. and Mrs. Ellery and Tiffany were probably all at the Kingsley residence right now.

Those people weren’t much different from Edwin when it came to their assumptions about Sylvia.
Fifteen minutes later, he pushed open the door to his family home and saw the three Ellery family members sitting nearly on the living room sofa. He couldn’t help but smirk.
See? He’s right.
Hearing the door open, all three immediately looked his way. Seeing he was alone, they still peered hopefully behind him, trying to spot sylvia,
“She didn’t come to me,” he said with a shrug.
