Evelyn’s brows furrowed as she looked at Daniel. “Daniel Sterling, thank you for helping me. But please stay out of this.”
Daniel’s face paled instantly, as if he’d been slapped. His lips parted, but no words came out.
The elevator doors slid shut, cutting off his lonely figure.
“Quite the performance,” Ethan’s voice was icy. “In such a hurry to push him away—afraid I’ll hurt him?”
Evelyn didn’t even glance at him. “None of your business.”
“Say that again.”
Ethan’s patience had worn thin. The cold war between them had pushed him to the edge, and Evelyn’s indifference only fueled his anger.
“What do you want?”
“Come back,” Ethan stepped closer. “I can pretend none of this ever happened.”
Evelyn lowered her lashes, silent for a moment. “There’s no way forward except divorce.”
“Evelyn!” He grabbed her wrist. “It’s over between me and Isabella!”
“This isn’t about her.” She pulled free. “I just want this marriage to end.”
“Never.”
“Then we live separate lives.” She met his gaze, her eyes hollow. “No interference.”
Ethan’s pupils constricted. “Separate lives?”
“Yes. If you can accept that, I won’t mention divorce again.”
The air in the elevator turned suffocating. Ethan stared at her, dark currents swirling in his eyes.
Ding—
The door was kicked open violently. Before Evelyn could react, she was thrown onto the bed.
Ethan pinned her down, undoing her buttons with one hand. “Want to play? I’ll give you a game you won’t forget.”
“Let go!” She gripped his wrist. “I have no interest in you.”
“But I’m not done with you yet.” His lips curled into a cold smirk. “When I’m bored, I’ll let you go.”
“Disgusting.” She turned her face away. “You make me sick.”
“Sick?” He gripped her chin. “That’s not what you said at the hotel.”
“That was the drugs talking.” Her laugh was mocking. “Any man would’ve had the same effect.”
“Evelyn!”
“What, do I need pills every time just to endure you?”
Rage burned in Ethan’s eyes. Evelyn seized the moment to shove him off, straightening her crumpled collar.
“If you need someone, go find Isabella.” Her voice was frigid. “You two know the drill.”
“I told you, there’s nothing between us!”
“Whatever you say.” Evelyn strode to the bathroom without looking back, slamming the door shut.
