Chapter 32
“I agree!”
“I absolutely disagree!”
Two opposing voices exploded in the living room. Margaret Sullivan shot to her feet, her well-maintained face twisted in shock. “Ethan Sullivan, have you lost your mind?! Evelyn had the audacity to openly hire male models!”
Ethan didn’t even lift his gaze. “My marriage is none of your concern.”
“None of my concern?!” Margaret trembled with rage. “After her disgraceful behavior, you still defend her?!”
“Mother, that’s enough.”
Evelyn suddenly chuckled. “I can sign the divorce papers anytime—if Mr. Sullivan is willing to let me go.”
Margaret narrowed her eyes suspiciously. “You’d give in that easily?”
“As you said,” Evelyn smoothed her cuffs leisurely, “three years without children, plus hiring male models—hardly worthy of the Sullivan name.”
“You’d better mean that!”
“Would you like it in writing?”
“Evelyn!” Ethan snapped, gripping her wrist.
She met his stormy gaze. “Everyone thinks we should divorce. Why cling to this, Mr. Sullivan?”
She couldn’t fathom it. Isabella was the one he truly loved—why keep her trapped?
His jaw tightened as he dragged her toward the door.
Margaret glared at their intertwined hands and angrily dialed Henry Sullivan. “Come home now! It’s an emergency!”
——
The moment they stepped outside, Evelyn wrenched her hand free.
“Ethan, I’m done pretending!”
He paused. “You won’t have to see her again.”
She blinked, caught off guard.
“My decision stands. I want a divorce.”
Ethan turned, caging her between the car and himself. “As long as I refuse, you remain Mrs. Sullivan.”
Evelyn looked away. “Not in the mood to argue today.”
Something twisted in his chest at her exhaustion.
The drive back passed in heavy silence.
——
The next morning, Evelyn handed a gift box to Sophia the moment she entered the office.
“Happy birthday.”
Sophia gasped upon unwrapping it. “Oh my God! Is this—”
“Ordered it months ago.”
“Evelyn!” Sophia hugged her tightly. “I’m wearing this on my date tonight!”
Evelyn arched a brow. “You have a boyfriend?”
“Yeah.” Sophia’s cheeks pinked. “I’ll introduce you soon.”
