Chapter 7
Ethan Sullivan’s gaze fell on his phone screen, his anticipation instantly turning to disappointment.
The caller ID showed Isabella Jackson.
“Ethan, Grandpa’s birthday is coming up,” Isabella’s sweet voice came through the phone. “Mom and Dad asked me to deliver the invitation. I’m passing by Sullivan Corporation—want to grab lunch?”
“Mhm.”
After hanging up, Ethan tossed a file onto his desk in frustration.
Evelyn Sullivan had actually managed to resist contacting him this time.
A knock sounded at the door.
Colin Keller hurriedly entered. “Mr. Sullivan, the Eastside Project auction has been moved up!”
“Assemble the project team immediately.”
By the time Isabella arrived, Ethan was still in a meeting.
“Miss Jackson, Mr. Sullivan asked me to escort you to his office,” Colin said respectfully.
Entering the office, Isabella’s eyes were drawn to a red velvet box on the desk.
This must be her birthday gift.
Unable to resist, she opened it—inside lay the necklace from the Seattle auction.
A sweet smile curved her lips.
An hour later, Ethan walked in.
“Apologies. Unexpected meeting.”
“It’s fine,” Isabella replied gently. “I’ve already ordered lunch.”
She gestured to the invitation on the desk. “Grandpa’s birthday is next Saturday. Can you make it?”
“I have a business trip. I’ll try to be back.”
Isabella hesitated. “About Evelyn… Her line is always busy when I call.”
At the mention of Evelyn, Ethan’s gaze turned icy.
“Her relationship with the family is strained. I was hoping Grandpa’s birthday could help mend things,” Isabella said carefully.
“I’ll let her know.”
……
Evelyn had just closed her laptop when William Jackson’s call came through.
“Grandpa’s birthday is next Saturday. You will attend!”
“I’m swamped with work. Might not have time.”
“What job is more important than your grandfather’s birthday?!” William snapped. “Bring Ethan with you!”
Evelyn fell silent for a moment.
The divorce needed to be addressed in person.
“Understood.”
After hanging up, Victoria Farley frowned. “Why even invite her?”
“She’s still Mrs. Sullivan.”
Victoria scoffed. “If Isabella hadn’t gone abroad, Evelyn would never have gotten the chance. They should divorce so Isabella can marry him!”
William’s expression darkened.
In three years, Evelyn had never secured any benefits for the Jackson family.
“Don’t act rashly,” he warned. “Until I say so, keep your mouth shut!”
Victoria turned away in disgust. “Isabella is the only daughter I acknowledge! Don’t forget what that feng shui master said—”
“Enough!” William cut her off sharply. “Bring that up again, and there will be consequences!”
Victoria paled, her hatred for Evelyn deepening.
That evening, as Evelyn was about to leave work, Sophia Reynolds burst into her office.
“Free tonight?”
the necklace? This is just the beginning.”
