Chapter 6
His smile froze on his face as he looked at me helplessly.
“Avery, you must have misspoken. We’re husband and wife–how could we be strangers?“]
I knew he was panicking.]
So panicked he couldn’t even remember what he’d done earlier today.]
I let out a cold snort, a mocking smile crossing my face.]]
“Killian, we got divorced today. We’re hardly husband and wife anymore!“]]
As my words sank in, the uneasiness surrounding him grew heavier.[]
I couldn’t be bothered wasting more words on him and turned to leave.]
“Professor Davis, let’s go.“]]
Davis nodded and opened the passenger door for me.[]
The moment I sat in the car, Killian desperately tried to rush toward me.
But tearful Chloe held him back.]
“Killian, my face hurts so bad! Can you check if my nose is crooked? Please take me to the hospital?”
Killian stopped in his tracks.]
He wanted to refuse, but his body instinctively moved to support Chloe.
In the end, all he could do was shout after me.]
“Avery, wait! Let me take Chloe to the hospital first, then I’ll explain everything to you!“]]
The car quickly disappeared down the street.]
Davis, who was driving, suddenly chuckled and shook his head.]
“Little junior, I can’t believe how much you’ve changed over the years–even throwing punches now.“]
Hearing this, I couldn’t help but laugh too.
Just like that, it felt like we were back in our old student days.
Truth is, I was never the quiet type–I was actually pretty hyperactive.[]
Back in school, my favorite pastime was messing with Professor Davis.[]
But his gentle nature meant he’d often cover for me, even when I caused major trouble.
Between laughs and stories, we arrived at our destination.
Looking at the familiar faculty apartments, I unconsciously stopped in my tracks.
Davis noticed and asked with a smile, “Now you’re finally scared? Then why the hell didn’t you come to me or the teacher when you were going through all that crap?”
1 looked down, fidgeting with my foot, kicking away a small stone.]
“The professor never approved of Killian and me in the first place. If she found out what happened, she’d lecture me to death.“]
Tm so terrified when she starts scolding people.“]
No sooner had the words left my mouth…]
Than I heard the professor’s voice–concerned yet scolding–from up ahead.]
“Is there anything you’re actually afraid of, young lady? After getting married, you couldn’t even spare a phone call for this old woman. And you claim to be afraid of me?”
I looked up suddenly to see my old professor standing not far away, leaning on her cane.
In an instant, my eyes welled up with tears, my heart filled with both anxiety and excitement.
“What, you see this old woman and don’t even come say hello?”
I took a deep breath, walked quickly toward her, my voice trembling
The tears that had been gathering in my eyes streamed down my face.]
“Professor, I’ve missed you so much.”
The professor’s gaze lingered on my face for a few seconds before her eyes reddened slightly. She gripped my hand tightly.
“Don’t cry, little Avery. Your professor is here for you now.”
Davis parked the car and returned to find this scene, instinctively wiping the corner of his eye.
He quickly smiled and said to us, “Alright, let’s head inside. We can talk about everything at home.“[]
“It’s cold out here late at night. We don’t want anyone catching a cold.”
I helped the professor back home.]
Looking at the familiar surroundings, my heart was filled with mixed emotions.]
After all these years, it seemed like nothing had changed.]
That night, the professor and I talked until dawn.[]
Eventually, considering her age, I convinced her to get some rest.
Early the next morning, I checked my phone for the time and saw numerous missed calls and messages from Killian.
He had texted me and called me repeatedly.
But since last night, I’d kept my phone on silent mode.
