Chapter 98
Silence instantly felt on the other side of the phone.
Audrey sat at the vanity, trying out the skincare set Amelia had gifted her. An eye cream that cost over a thousand, and some kind of molecular massage
device
The high–frequency vibrations were quite comfortable; when she opened her eyes again, the redness had lessened.
Audrey, you knew the difficulties ahead but still deliberately dumped the project on me.” Edana ground her teeth, bitter and helpless.
To verify the project’s feasibility, she treated Luther and the heads of various departments to dinner, but those people completely ignored her. When they heard Audrey had handled the paperwork, they mocked her coldly.
Luther was quite displeased not to meet the department heads and left a parting remark. “I don’t care what internal issues you have. I want the project to move forward smoothly. If you can’t do it, bring in someone who can.”
Edana experienced such humiliation for the first time. Usually, she used her position to take credit for contracts others worked hard to negotiate. Paul wouldn’t say a word, nor would the partners. But today, she lost face and couldn’t even gather a dinner.
Edana said, “Audrey, if you have issues with me, say it to my face. No need to take it out on the company’s projects. Mr. Gibson won’t let you cause
trouble.”
Audrey put the massager back in its box, her eyes cold. She thought, ‘No skills? Then don’t try to take my work. If you want to sabotage me and keep all the benefits, you have to face the consequences.‘
“Edana, I have no grudge or opinion against you. If you’re unhappy with me, you can talk to Mr. Gibson.”
“You-
“Sorry, I have a call coming in. Talk later.” Audrey hung up directly.
There was noise downstairs; someone had returned.
Audrey checked herself again, confirmed nothing was wrong, then left the room.
Amelia was already on the second floor and wasn’t surprised to see her home.
“How is he?” Amelia pointed toward the master bedroom.
Audrey replied, “He’s resting.”
Amelia nodded and motioned for Audrey to come with her. “He’s usually tough as an ox, and now look at him… I’ve never admired anyone in my life, but
I have to hand it to him this time.”
Audrey didn’t quite understand, but she also felt Yann shouldn’t be this fragile. He’d once broken a leg and didn’t even cry out during the realignment.
When he had a fever, one painkiller and he was up like nothing happened. But today, he looked like he couldn’t even take care of himself.
Amelia knocked on the door out of courtesy, but didn’t wait for a reply and walked in.
The bed was empty. There was the sound of running water in the bathroom.
“Why are you up?” Amelia went over and knocked on the bathroom door. “If you’re not feeling well, just rest. Work can wait.”
No response. The water kept running.
Amelia knocked again. “You didn’t faint in there, did you? Are you awake? Say something!”

“Get out,” came a low, hoarse voice from inside.

Amelia jumped back. She thought, ‘No way? Is that tonic coffee effective? His body can’t even handle it, and he still wants to… relieve himself?‘

She gave Audrey an awkward glance. Seeing she hadn’t caught on, she quickly said toward the bathroom, “I’ll have Audrey make you some coffee. Sweat it out after your shower.”
With that, she dragged Audrey out. On the way, she glanced at the nightstand. “You know what? Calvin’s pretty thoughtful. Even prepped lemon water. If he were a girl, I’d support them getting together no matter what.”
Audrey’s mouth twitched. That lemon water had been her idea.
“Amelia, are you sure Mr. Winifred and Calvin are…?” Audrey made a heart shape with her fingers.
Amelia pulled her to the living room for a chat, completely forgetting about the coffee. “At first I didn’t believe it either, but he is different with Calvin!”
“Tell me more!”
“Calvin doesn’t hold any position in the company, and he’s not responsible for any projects, but he’s very close with him I checked the call logs–they’ve talked on the phone nearly every week for the past two years. Sometimes just a few minutes, sometimes half an hour!”
“Whoa!”
“And every time Yann picks up his call, that icy face like the world owes him billions suddenly changes–sometimes doting, sometimes teasing. You think there’s nothing going on?”
“You’ve got a point!”
“I took the call logs and confronted him. He was afraid I’d go after Calvin, so he came straight to Ironhaven the next day. And ever since, he takes me everywhere with him–just so I won’t cause trouble!”
“Exactly!”
Amelia handed Audrey two crunchy walnuts. “You like crosstalk comedy?”
“Love it!” Audrey cracked one open and shared half with her. “How about I treat you to a show sometime?”
Yann came downstairs, freshly showered and dressed. He saw the two women chatting enthusiastically and took a seat across from them.
“Oh wow, you’re up already?” Amelia noticed him and handed him some walnuts. “Audrey and I are going out for dinner. You and Calvin do whatever.”
Yann looked at Audrey.
Audrey quickly looked away, cracking a walnut, slowly peeling it. From the corner of her eye, she could still see him.
He had just taken a shower, hair half–dry, his white shirt untucked and hanging loosely over his pants. There was a laziness about him, but also a kind of indulgent satisfaction. His deep eyes looked calm and cool–not a trace of that earlier madness.
Either Yann was hiding it really well, or he had a bad habit of “kissing and forgetting.”
“What are you staring at Audrey for?” Amelia waved her hand. “She’s coming with me tonight. I’ll pay her wages!”
Yann said, “My coffee.”
“Oh, I’ll go make it right now.” Audrey quickly got up and went to the kitchen.
Amelia handed the walnuts to her son and whispered, “The daughter–in–law I dreamed about day and night ended up as someone else’s.” Before Yann could respond, she went back to her room.
