The next day, I took my luggage and hailed a cab to the airport.
Lying on the plane, I finally relaxed and had a good night’s sleep. I’d been waiting for this sleep for a long, long time.
Since I arrived early, no one was there to greet me. I found my own place to stay and then went to the company to transition my
responsibilities with the local branch manager.
The next day at the company, the first thing I did was look for a junior employee.
His name was Wesley. He had grown up abroad, and because of the climate here, his skin was paler than ours. He was tall but very thin, and he didn’t like to talk much, quietly working at his desk.
Seeing his reserved nature, colleagues often dumped all sorts of odd jobs on him. He never refused, just silently accepted their bullying. Compared to others, he seemed more introverted and timid, lacking any outward confidence.
But I knew he wasn’t as timid as he seemed. On the contrary, he was incredibly capable and talented. In our past life, not long after Nora died, he left the company. Some time later, his identity was revealed, and he became the wealthiest man.
In the wealthiest family back home, he was just an illegitimate child. His mother, fearing for his safety from his half–siblings, had sent him abroad since birth. He knew that even hiding abroad, he’d still be under scrutiny, so he pretended to be incapable of vying for the family fortune, hiding away.
“I know who you are, the youngest son of the wealthiest family. I need you to marry me.”
Wesley still pretended to be timid and looked at me with nervous, trembling hands.

“Though we’re not as wealthy as your family, our military connections can keep you safe.”
“I know what you’re afraid of. I can protect you from your so–called brother’s assassination attempts and help you gain your family’s wealth.”
I presented him with an offer he couldn’t refuse, and he looked at me with astonishment.
“I need you to help me with some things. Our marriage would be a win–win.”
Wesley pondered for a long time.
“I agree,” he nodded.
That day, we registered our marriage. I sent a message and our marriage certificate to my mom, letting her know I was
married.
Mom only replied with a simple “Happy wedding.”
Meanwhile, as Jasper and Nora’s wedding took place, Jasper watched the guests come and go, but there was no sign of me. He paced back and forth, but he couldn’t leave to find
- me.
After the wedding, Jasper anxiously approached my mom.
“Mom, didn’t Cora come today?”
Mom glanced at him.
“Cora left for abroad two days ago. What point is there for her to stay?”
“Jasper, the jade pendant your mom left with Cora before she passed was shattered, her cat was killed, and you abandoned her to marry her sister.”
“You young people have your own ideas. Since you’ve made your decision, take responsibility and don’t think about anything else.”
Mom knew about my recent plight and sternly admonished Jasper.
Hearing Mom’s words, Jasper finally recalled that the meat Nora joyfully cooked that day was Whiskers, Aunt Genevieve’s little pet she had raised for a few months.
A pang of guilt pierced his heart as an aunt came over with her husband.
“Congratulations, Mrs. He! You’ve had double happiness lately! When your eldest daughter returns home, don’t forget to treat us to wedding candies!”
