The old manor stood as grim and imposing as ever.Ancient cypress trees stood at the gate,their branches rustling in the cold wind.
As soon as Nathan stepped inside,he saw Alicia sitting on the couch,cradling the baby in her arms. Her head was lowered demurely,her eyes red–rimmed and she looked pitiful.
The old lady sat in the middle,her face full of anger.
Nathan’s expression darkened. He understood immediately.Alicia had come to tattle.
Before he could utter a word, the old madam slammed the table with a resounding thud and shouted angrily,“Kneel.”
Nathan stood motionless,his brows furrowed.
‘If you don’t kneel, I’ll!“The old madam stood up directly,her voice trembling with emotion. Nathan felt his heart tighten.He feared that she would become angry and sick. All he could do was grit his teeth,step forward,bow his head and kneel.
The chill from the floor tiles sent bursts of pain through his knees and his face turned pale. The old lady pointed at him with trembling fingers and gritted her teeth. “Do you know that Laurissa is a heart patient and how high the risk of getting pregnant and having a baby is?”
He closed his eyes,his voice so low it was almost inaudible, “I know.”
‘Then why did you refuse for her to get pregnant for so many years? Is it that you never wanted to get her pregnant?”
The words stabbed his heart like daggers. Nathan was silent for a long time before he finally spoke slowly,” That’s right.”
A single word,like a nail nailed to the floor.
Nathan’s heart tumbled with the realization that he truly never wanted to get me pregnant.
It was not because he didn’t want to,but because he was too afraid. He was afraid something would happen to me,terrified I’d be in pain,afraid I’d leave.Every single time he saw those.
He was all too aware of his own greed and vulnerability and he’d rather not have a baby than risk losing me at all.
The old madam was so angry that her face turned red and she angrily slapped the table, “You are the only child of the Campbell Family,do you want this lineage to be cut off from your line?” Without warning,she grabbed an inkstone from the coffee table and hurled it.
It struck Nathan’s temple with a sickening crack. Blood immediately streamed down,soaking his brow and staining his vision.
I had never been able to understand that the drug was obviously not so strong that it could make people lose control,but Nathan and Alicia still had a night of absurdity.
The matter had stayed in my mind countless times,always like a thorn in my throat.
Actually, when Nathan drank that drugged wine,he wasn’t completely in control;he was sober enough to make that decision.
