- 5.
I met Chad at a restaurant next to the firm.
I ate while asking him about the details of the
paperwork.
“You really want a divorce?”
<
Chad gave me a sad look.
He had no idea what was going on between
Nick and me.
Nobody at the firm did.
Nick hated bringing personal stuff to work.
“Yeah, my husband cheated. But I’m done
anyway.”
I was talking when Nick and Summer walked
in holding hands.
As soon as Nick saw me, he let go of
Summer’s hand.
I gave them both a polite smile.

I gave them both a polite smile.
Then I waved down a waiter and asked to
move to the sunny corner.
The sun was warm, and I wasn’t bothered by them.
I remembered two months ago.
Nick was with Summer, and I was picking out
a birthday gift for him.
I accidentally ran into him.
I froze, Summer was cool as ice, and Nick
just exploded.
He accused me of following him and ruining
his business meeting.

I sat in front of the mall, crying all day.
So this time, I stayed away.
The divorce papers were easy to draft.
Chad had to run, but he told me to change a few things and then left.
I drank coffee under the sun, humming, making changes to the paperwork.
“Lindsey, can I give you a ride back to the
office?”
Nick was standing at my table, with a smile.
Summer was gone.
I rolled my eyes, and nodded:
“You and your side piece have a great time, huh?”
There was a lipstick stain on his suit.
Nick looked down and frantically tried to wipe it off.
“I was paying, and she took it for a second. I guess she didn’t notice…”
He was being so careful, but I didn’t give a damn.
“I’ll give you a ride to the office?”
Nick asked again.
I stared at the divorce papers.

I nodded, and then apologized:
“Sorry, almost done, can you wait a second?”
He looked happy, and he leaned in to look at
the screen:
“What’s that?”
