Chapter 20%
Beckett stared at the two people bawling in front of him, snot and tears running down their faces. He let out a cold, mocking laugh.”
“Oh please. That’s not how I see it. Since neither of you want to talk–then you can both rot in hell!”}
With a snap of his fingers and a deadly glare in his eyes, Beckett signaled his security team to drag them both away.}
The man, who had been groveling on the floor, froze. When he realized Beckett wasn’t bluffing, sheer panic seized him–his legs gave out beneath him and he collapsed in a heap.
“No, no, don’t kill me! I’ll tell you everything! It was her!” he pointed to Delaney. “She came up with the whole thing! I have nothing to do with it.”
Beckett raised a hand to halt the guards and turned back to the man, his face twisted into something between amusement and disgust.
“Go on. I want to hear how the two of you managed to turn me into your personal clown.“}
Finally, the pieces clicked into place. Beckett remembered this man–he was the one who had been briefly engaged to Delaney overseas but then vanished. Now it all made sense.
As the
spilled every dirty detail in a breathless confession, Beckett’s expression darkened.}
Delaney had gone abroad with him. Back then, the guy had put on quite the show–driving flashy cars, dining in luxury, making it seem like he was rolling in cash. Delaney, blinded by the illusion, followed him without hesitation.}
But their relationship wasn’t just a short–lived engagement–they had secretly gotten married overseas.
Eventually, they’re running out of money. The man had funded their overseas life by selling his house and the cash didn’t last long with their lavish spending.
The man showed his true colors when Delaney became pregnant.”
When she realized he was broke and that she’d have to work a regular job to get by, she had the baby aborted and prepared to return to the country alone. But it was easy to leave–getting back was harder. Once the man discovered she wanted to run, he became extremely guarded.
Desperate to escape the miserable life, Delaney convinced him to borrow money. Eventually, he racked up massive debt and with the creditors closing in, she took the opportunity to flee back home.
Once back, she reconnected with Beckett, using the mistaken identity as his ‘savior‘ to manipulate her way into his life again.”
She thought, at most, he’d give her a little money as thanks. But to her surprise, Beckett was not only generous–he even seemed to have some lingering affection for her.
With Beckett’s ambiguous behavior feeding her confidence, Delaney grew bolder and more brazen. Her ambitions only swelled.} And little by little, she led Beckett down a path of ruin… until everything spun completely out of control.
