Chapter 15%
A few days later, under Delaney’s constant hints and pressure, Beckett finally took her to a bridal boutique to try on wedding dresses.
But the moment he stepped into the store, surrounded by rows of white gowns, Beckett couldn’t help but think of the time he came here with me to try on wedding dresses.
Back then, we were so happy and in love. And now, because of his own selfishness, everything was gone.
In a daze, Beckett thought he heard my voice.
“Honey, honey, what are you doing? Come here! Didn’t you say you wanted to see me try on dresses? Do I look good?“%
Beckett smiled faintly, murmuring, “You’ll always be the beautiful one, my love. You’d look amazing in anything.“}
“Oh, you’re such sweet–talker, Beckett. Look at this huge belly–how could I possibly look pretty?“%
Delaney’s sharp laughter jolted Beckett back to reality.
He looked at Delaney, standing in front of him in a backless gown and suddenly felt that all the innocence she used to have had vanished. Now she looked so flashy and cheap.”
Suddenly, his gaze froze as if he saw something he couldn’t believe. There no scars on Delaney’s back. She was supposed to have burn scar–from saving him from the fire.”
Beckett’s suspicion deepened. He was just one step away from blurting it all out.
But in the end, he held back–not for Delaney’s sake, but because he didn’t want to alert her too soon.
His expression darkened. If Delaney wasn’t the one who saved him… then who was?\
His heart started to race. And not in the way it used to when I smiled at him. This was different–panic, dread, regret all rolled into one. If Delaney hadn’t been the one who saved his life, then all those years he spent repaying her kindness were for nothing.
As soon as Delaney finally finished trying on the dresses, Beckett rushed back to the Shaw residence.}
He had to find out the truth–both from the past and the present.
Before he could even go find his assistant, the assistant was already there, waiting. When he spotted Delaney lazily lounging next to Beckett, the assistant’s face showed hesitation.}
Beckett saw it and instantly understood–his assistant must have found something from the investigation he asked for.
The thought made him both excited and apprehensive.}
Somewhere deep down, Beckett feared what he might uncover.
But then he thought of me–still missing, with no trace–and clenched his jaw. He signaled his assistant with a glance and stood up to follow.”
But before he could take more than a few steps, Delaney called out behind him.§
“Where are you two going? Can’t you just talk here?” Her face was filled with confusion–and a trace of suspicion.
Beckett forced a familiar smile and said indulgently, “it’s just company stuff. I don’t want to worry you with it. You’re pregnant.“%
“Just relax and watch the TV. If you’re bored, go out and buy yourself something nice. Here.”
As he spoke, Beckett handed her a credit card.
Delaney happily accepted it and chirped, “Thanks, honey,” before dropping the matter.”
Beckett kept a smile on his face for her sake, but the second he turned away, his expression went cold.”
