I stood and walked away.
Jake felt pain and frowned.

The house was empty.
“Bethany!” He panicked.
He looked everywhere, but I was gone.
He called Chloe.
“Chloe, is Bethany with you?” He said.
Chloe was silent, and said, “You wanted to
break up, right? She left.”
“Left?! Where?” Jake started. “I didn’t mean
it! Where would she go?”

Jake froze, and dropped his phone.

“Miscarriage? Arranged marriage?”
Jake stumbled back, his head swimming.
No way, it was all a lie. Bethany was a master of manipulation. She and Chloe were trying to trick him.
“No! She can’t be pregnant. She…” Jake’s voice cracked.

Chloe laughed. “Seven weeks along.”
Seven weeks? Jake remembered that night at
the gala. He’d been drugged, and he’d ended
up with Bethany. Could that be it?
He sank onto the sofa, clutching his head.
Chloe’s voice dripped with sarcasm. “What’s
wrong, Uncle? Aren’t you happy? Now you
can bring your first love home. She’s been
waiting a long time for the Mrs. Jake title.”
Jake shot to his feet, desperate.
“I have to find her! Give me her address!”

“Find her?” Chloe laughed. “Did I hear that
right? Sorry, can’t help you!”
Then she hung up.
