I laughed out loud. “The fuck are you saying?!“}
I crossed my arms. “I’ve been paying for his mom’s hospital bills myself. Her condition is stable!
“So now he’s actually teaming up with you and using his own mother to manipulate me? Faking sympathy? Seriously? You’re cheap and sick!”
That bastard… He really put on a show?!}
Marlow’s jaw clenched. “If you don’t believe it, call the hospital, bitch.“}
I glared. But… something twisted in my stomach.
I pulled out my phone and called the attending doctor.
“Hi–can you tell me how Jarrett’s mother is doing?”
“She… She passed away four days ago. She missed a scheduled surgery.”
“What?” I gasped. “Four days ago? But… Jarrett was unconscious during that time…“}
My eyes literally widened in shock. “Why the hell didn’t anyone tell me?!“}
There was a pause.
الله
“Ma’am, didn’t you specifically request that we not involve you in decisions or contact you regarding the patient?“}
“1-1-” My voice caught in my throat. I had no answer.
When I hung up, I stood there in a daze until I heard Jordan’s voice.
“Babe, something’s off. That condition doesn’t just turn fatal overnight. Jarrett probably knew it was coming and didn’t tell you. “Since the divorce threat didn’t work, now he’s playing the grief card. That low–life even used his mom’s life for pity!“>
Marlow’s POV
‘The audacity!“}
Jarrett told Fern about his mom’s condition multiple times. But that bitch was always too busy cozying up with her latest boy toy to give a damn. In one ear, out the other.
So Jarrett stopped trying.
Hearing this bitch’s current fling feed her nonsense, I lost it.”
“If you hadn’t stolen his bonus while he was unconscious–and impersonated him to cancel the surgery–his mom would still be alive!“}
I wasn’t supposed to say it. Not with the case still under investigation.
But I didn’t care.
“Bullshit!” Jordan, that liar, barked. “Yeah, I held his bonus–because he was slacking. But I didn’t contact the hospital and cancel any surgery!”
Of course, Fern took his side.
“Jordan would never do that. But Jarrett? That asshole’s shameless enough for anything. Even sacrificing his own mom wouldn’t be impossible for him.
She pointed a finger at me. “And you–you better learn your place.”
With that, she grabbed him and stormed out.
I shook my head and could only mutter, “Absolutely hopeless.“}}
Jarrett’s POVE
The day we buried Mom, Fern didn’t come.
Of course she didn’t.
Instead, she sent some poor guy in
black button–down who handed me a phone. “Ma’am Fern wants to speak with you, sir.”
As soon as I took the phone, I heard her voice come through cold and sharp.
“Quit acting out. Come home. My parents are flying back this week–don’t embarrass me.”
Still talking down to me like nothing had happened.
“Why the hell would I care?” My voice was low, my fists clenching.
She snapped. “Asshole! I even lowered myself and sent someone to pick you up! What more do you want?! Your mom died? That’s her karma! Don’t pin it on anyone else! After all, she-
I threw the phone on the ground and shattered it against the cemetery pavement.
I turned to the guy holding the umbrella for me.
“Tell her this: see you in court.”
Fern’s POV
When I heard from my guy what Jarrett actually said, I slammed my hands on the table, and my teeth were grinding with rage. “That son of a bitch! He’s really trying to flip the whole damn world upside down, huh?!”
