- 2.
I stumbled out of the hospital, my mind a
blank, my body numb.
Everything that just happened felt like a
nightmare.
Just a little while ago. Declan and I had finally.
saved up $20,000. He promised he’d marry
- me.
And now this.
My phone suddenly rang. It was the
steakhouse.
“Hello, Ms. Frost? We just got a call from
your boyfriend. He wants to cancel tonight’s
reservation.”
“I remembered you were the one who booked
it, so I wanted to confirm with you.”
My stomach dropped.
Today was supposed to be our seven–year
anniversary.
<
I a splurged on a tancy, expensive restaurant,
wanting to make it special.
But Noelle waking up had ruined everything.
And now he was canceling the reservation
too.
“Go ahead and cancel it,” I said, my voice
bitter.
“Where will the refund go?”
“It’s already been refunded to your
boyfriend’s card.”
My hand fell limp at my side.
Declan really was a cheapskate, wasn’t he?
He couldn’t even let go of the deposit for our
anniversary dinner.
Suddenly, I realized how little I’d actually
gotten from him in these seven years.
The only expensive thing he’d ever given me
was a lipstick he won in a company raffle.
It was sitting in my drawer at home,
treasured.
