I planned to move to a new city and start over.
As I was packing, Fiona suddenly barged into my place.
She reeked of alcohol, her hair disheveled, like a madwoman, “Lachlan, I threw sulfuric acid on Dashiell, he’s been punished, can’t you forgive me now?”
In a short time, she had changed so much, nothing but skin and bones, and out of her mind.
She sobbed and pleaded, “Lachlan, I really know I was wrong, please forgive me, give me another chance…”
I sighed.
The woman I once loved so dearly had become like this. No matter how hard–hearted I was, I couldn’t help but feel a tinge of pity.
But it was just pity.
“Fiona, just go. There’s no possibility between us anymore. Let’s end this peacefully.”
“No!” Fiona’s voice trembled, humbling herself, “Lachlan, don’t be so cruel, okay? We were together for so many years, I even saved your life once! In those three foolish years, though I betrayed you, I sincerely took care of you! You can’t erase all I did because of one mistake…”
Before she could finish, a group of police officers broke in.
“Ms. Fiona, we’ve received a report accusing you of intentionally injuring someone with sulfuric acid. Please come with us for investigation!”
Fiona was handcuffed by the police.
Before being taken away, she looked at me with tear–filled eyes, her lips trembling, “Lachlan, I’m going to prison, and you still won’t forgive me?”
“Yes!” I looked into her eyes and said firmly, “Fiona, I will never forgive you for what you’ve done to me!”
She stared at me blankly, despair in her eyes.
“Ha!” She laughed self–mockingly.
Without another word, she was taken away by the police.
For aggravated assault, she was sentenced to twelve years of imprisonment.
Dashiell, due to the severity of his injuries, had to have his hands amputated and his face was disfigured. He lay in the ICU for months, unable to escape danger.
But none of this had anything to do with me anymore.
Alone, I moved to a new city with my luggage.
I found a new job and started a new life.
After some time. I got promoted and received a raise, becoming a department manager.

Everything was moving in a positive direction.
Half a year later, I received a phone call.
The voice on the other end was familiar, with a hint of trembling and weakness. “Lachlan, I’m on medical parole, my condition is worsening, I don’t have much time left… can you come to the hospital to see me… one last time? I’m begging you, don’t let me die with regrets, please?”
I paused for a moment, then replied decisively, “I won’t come, don’t wait for me!”
Without waiting for a response, I quickly hung up the phone.
Three days later, I got another call.
it was from the prison.
A prison officer informed me, “Mr. Lachlan, your wife Fiona passed away this morning at 7:40 in the hospital. When do you have time to come and handle her affairs?”
I paused, responding coldly, “I’m busy with work, I don’t have time to come over. Handle her affairs however you see fit, scatter her ashes into the sea, and don’t call me again.”
With that, I hung up.
Let the past fade with the wind.
Now, I have a new life, reborn, no longer bound by the past.
What awaits me is a brighter future.
