Fiona found where I was staying, and that afternoon, she intercepted me on my walk, looking lost.
“Lachlan…” her eyes were red, her voice choked, “I finally found you…”
I didn’t intend to engage her, turning to leave, but she grabbed my wrist.
“Lachlan, don’t go, listen to me!”
What do you want to say?” I glanced at her.
Fiona’s eyes filled with tears as she rasped out, “Lachlan, I was wrong in the past. I shouldn’t have betrayed you, or listened to Dashiell’s lies, trying to kill you. I do love you, I just couldn’t accept you being out of it, and I made a mistake in a moment of confusion… Lachlan, I regret it, can you forgive me this once?”
“Hah!”
I could only find it laughable.
“Fiona, after you did such heartless things to me, how can you expect me to forgive you?”
Fiona’s tears fell in large drops, splattering down, “For the sake of our years as husband and wife, can’t you forgive me this once? Lachlan, my breast cancer has returned, it’s in the late stage, the doctor says I’ll need a full mastectomy, and the treatment costs fifty thousand… I’m at a dead end, can you really stand by and watch me die?”
Fiona’s tearful plea no longer moved me at all.
“Ha!”
I found it utterly ridiculous.
“Fiona, how can you expect forgiveness from me after doing something so heartless?”
Fiona’s tears fell like rain, “For the sake of our years together, can’t you forgive me just this once? Lachlan, my breast cancer has returned, and it’s in the late stages. The doctor says I need a mastectomy, and the treatment costs 500,000… I’m utterly desperate. Can you really watch me waste away and die?”
Despite Fiona’s tears and sobs, I felt nothing.

“For three years, even though I acted foolishly, my mind remained clear! I watched as you betrayed me over and over, as you looked at me with indifference, allowing your lover to beat me, even trying to kill me! Each betrayal felt like a knife cutting into my heart!
“Fiona, my selfless sacrifice was met with your cold indifference! How can I ever forgive you?”
By the time I’d finished, Fiona was already in tears.
Her face was full of remorse as she shook her head desperately, “I’m so sorry, Lachlan, I was wrong… terribly wrong! Please forgive me, give me one last chance, I’m begging you…”
“Ive given you plenty of chances! Every time I was about to give up, I reminded myself of our past and convinced myself to hold on a bit longer. But you? You tried to kill me just to be with Dashiell
I’m sorry. I’m sorry.”
