But Jack’s family had no way to deal with Max.
Although Max’s family’s influence couldn’t match Jack’s family, they had made a lot of money from overseas investments in recent years Business pressure wouldn’t hurt him.
Life had to go on.
Grandpa’s previous birthday banquet had ended abruptly, but now that he had recovered, Jack’s family re–organized a party to thank gues for their gifts.
The guests put on a good show, acting as if Jack’s family’s scandal had never happened, pleasing Grandpa to no end.
The younger generation’s table wasn’t so reserved. I overheard Frank quietly asking Jack:
“Bro, have you figured out what to do?”
Jack didn’t try to hide it:
“I’ll just keep a low profile for now. It’s not good to divorce right away.”
Frank asked again: “Won’t she keep pestering you?”
“I’ve instructed the hotel apartment and company security, she can’t get in.”
Jack took a few more sips of wine, then slowly spoke, seemingly explaining to Frank, or perhaps to himself:
“During that time, I was under a lot of work pressure. Zoe, you know, she’s so dazzling and outgoing…”
“Don’t laugh, but I really wanted to find someone who would go along with everything I said, someone who centered their life around me.”
“Then I met her. Gentle, obedient, and coincidentally shared all my interests.”
He shook his head slowly, laughing bitterly:
“How could such a person exist? She just did her research.”
His voice wasn’t loud, but he wasn’t trying to hide from anyone. Several people sitting nearby could hear.
Frank drank with him:
“I just think it’s such a waste, you and Zoe were childhood sweethearts.”
Jack said quietly: “Yeah.”
Then he looked up at me, his eyes full of hope.
Lucy couldn’t stand it anymore:
“Don’t drag Zoe into this. She’s dating a super handsome indie film actor, very happy”
“A commoner like you, she’s not interested anymore.”
Jack suddenly asked: ‘Is it Ryan?”
I nodded
He sighed:

“I started hating him when I accompanied you to watch that movie back then.”
