Chapter 8
After ten hours, 1 successfully arrived in Jortland.
The moment I landed, Anika, along with her colleagues from the law firm, came up to greet me warmly, expressing a heartfelt welcome.
This was my third time coming to Lenonpool.
Due to a business trip, I was immediately called back for a report after signing the contract.
Now that the pressure of work is gone, I feel particularly relaxed.
Because from today on, I only needed to live for myself.
And Edwin, would never find his way here.
“Ashlee, you were willing to join in, and I was happy.”
My return made Anika unable to help but sigh.
When I was in school, I was the most promising “talented girl” among many students, second only
to my senior Troy Powlet.
Little did I expect that after Edwin and I got together, I rejected Anika’s suggestion to go abroad.
Even Anika abandoned the future that she had planned for me before going abroad.
Before leaving, Anika looked at me with a heavy heart, her eyes filled with regret and
disappointment. “Ashlee, you shouldn’t have been so confined to your family. You were meant to
have a broader world.”
Fortunately, it is not too late to regret now.
Fortunately, everything was still in time.
“I have already sent the divorce agreement. I will have your senior brother help you handle this case, ensuring… fairness.”
When it came to the last two words, Anika, who rarely showed her emotions, displayed an unusual anger on her face.
I smiled and winked at Troy, “Then I’ll count on you, senior brother, to work hard. When we get the money, I’ll treat everyone to a trip!”
Seeing the playfulness that I had in my school days, Anika’s calm heart finally settled: “Come, let

me take you to the company to familiarize yourself with the new environment.”
But I didn’t expect to meet Edwin so soon.
On the first day of work, I saw Edwin’s figure downstairs at the company.
At first, I couldn’t believe it. I rubbed my eyes a few times before I realized that I wasn’t dreaming
Edwin looked haggard, as if he was about to faint any second, but he stubbornly stayed at the door
and refused to leave.
When he saw me appear, he quickly walked towards me. I instinctively took a step back, creating
distance between us.
Noticing my distance, a hurt expression began to appear on his face: “Ashlee, don’t be angry, it was my fault.”
These past two years, I have been overly focused on Lena because I saw in her the version of you from nine years ago, mistakenly thinking that I liked her.
“It was not until you left that I realized that what they call ‘liking‘ is nothing but an illusion. The person I have always loved in my heart is you.”
I looked at him jokingly, suppressing the overwhelming nausea churning in my stomach.
Edwin’s self–righteous affection continued, “I have witnessed your performance over the years, and perhaps it was your abilities displayed in your work that impressed me under pressure. I felt that you had changed.”
“Rational and assertive, like a cold and merciless machine.”
“So when Lena appeared, I instinctively wanted to get closer, as if I saw the same you I first met in
her…‘

“Ashlee, I didn’t want a divorce, and I definitely didn’t want to lose you. Can you please forgive me this one time, considering that I was willing to overcome my fear of going abroad for you?”
In the midst of speaking, Edwin burst into tears, but only a cold feeling remained in my heart.
This is the man I loved, even though he had already fallen in love with someone else, he was still trying to justify himself.
They even tried to attribute the reason for the affair to me.
Because of my strength and rationality, he said that I had changed.

Because I made him feel pressured, he fell in love with Lena.
Those qualities that he used to praise to the skies have now become the very reasons for his “forced” infidelity.
How ridiculous it was!
“Once wrong, it’s wrong. When you make a mistake, you must be brave enough to accept the cost of betrayal.”
“If a simple apology could be enough to be forgiven, then what would be the need for police in this
world?”
“Edwin, we have ended.”
After saying that, I walked past him and entered the law firm.
Edwin did not bother anymore.
He knew my personality.
Once a decision was made, there was no turning back.
But I saw that he stood straight downstairs of the company for a whole day, regardless of the strange looks from others, and also regardless of the wind and sun.
But what meaning did these have?
Some emotions, once missed, are missed forever.
For two years, I had given him ninety–nine chances, but he missed them all…
He, like this, was not worthy of forgiveness.
