Chapter 7
Edwin, who hung up the phone, stayed in the office until the end of the workday.
Finally, he opened my office, sat in my seat, and looked at the photo of us on the desk. Memories of our past flashed through his mind.
Nine years ago, I met Edwin for the first time at a college debate competition.
Back then, I was full of confidence, engaging in verbal battles with the scholars, and a few words left the other party speechless.
Unsurprisingly, Edwin also became my defeated subordinate.
But Edwin was different from the other boys.
After the debate, when the other boys heard my name, their first impression was that I was strong,
domineering, and difficult to deal with.
Edwin, however, said that I was rational, wise, and decisive.
Since then, he began to pursue me fiercely.
It took us two years from acquaintance to falling in love.
It took us another two years from dating to getting married.
He still vividly remembers the scene of the proposal to this day.
He remembered the excited feeling when I nodded with a red face, which made him even happier than signing a contract worth ten billion.
But later, our relationship started to have problems.
He was not sure where the problem lay.
I felt that the distance between the two of us was getting farther and farther.
Many old colleagues noticed the changes between us and warned him.
But by that time, he had already become the company’s general manager, below the president and above the employees.
I couldn’t take any advice from my colleagues.
Now thinking back, if Edwin had listened to a single word back then, we wouldn’t have reached this point.

The nine–year relationship came to an end like this, and anyone who hears it can’t help but feel
regretful.
Lost in thought, the phone rang: “I found the address, but are you sure you want to go? It’s going to require taking a plane.”
Edwin’s parents both died in a plane crash, and ever since then, airplanes and the sky have become
his nightmares.
Even for international business, he would always send me, whom he trusted the most, with the pre–signed contract to get things done.
“What happened exactly? Why do you suddenly want to go abroad?”
The person on the other end of the phone inquired about the reason.
Edwin fell silent for a moment, then let out a breath and said, “Ashlee left…”
“Ah?” There was some shock on the other end of the phone, but unexpectedly, they didn’t continue
to ask further.
“I asked you something, did you all feel that I crossed the line with Lena in these three years? Did you feel that I owed Ashlee an apology?”
His words left his friend on the other side in silence.
And silence, sometimes, is the best response.
“I understood.”
Edwin spoke with a bitter expression, “I was wrong. Ever since Lena appeared, I found myself unconsciously drawn to her.”
“I felt that she sometimes resembled a young Ashlee, vibrant and exuberant.”
“But I shouldn’t have confused them.”
“Over the past two years, I exhausted the 99 chances she gave me.”
“I never thought about separating from her, but now she doesn’t want me anymore.”
At this point, Edwin’s voice became low and choked, accompanied by suppressed sobs.
There was a long silence on the other end of the phone before finally speaking slowly, “Okay, I
understand.”

The phone hung up, and a text message popped up on the mobile phone: “The fax was sent from here, you should go and ask, you might be able to find out her news.”
